For you DIY folks:

The fellows over at Runoffgroove have developed a new DIY bass pre.

Ginger

This is the successor to the Flipster which is an awesome sounding pedal.

This looks like a super fun project and the sound samples are sexy as hell.

I just want to let everyone know that the 2N5457 and all of its sister parts are being discontinued by the manufacturer. Most likely any manufacturer that is using these parts will be changing their designs to accommodate something that will be easier to acquire (I did)… so, there will be old stock available for a while, but expect the price to increase.

Hopefully someone will chime in with an equivalent substitute.

I've never taken the time to really learn how to do perfboard... how hard is it?

Also, I've been lusting after an audere onboard pre for my new jazz project, but now I'm thinking of just going passive and using this as a pre instead-- well not pre into a power amp, but more of a tone shaper. Any thoughts on that?

it's a shame. seems Fairchild Semiconductor is going to stop producing FET's. Central Semiconductor is still making them though. Check out Mouser.

It is a bummer because these FET’s are very popular and economical.
The Central Semiconductor 2N5457 is $0.46 each whereas the Fairchild is $0.15. Mouser has a minimum order of 2,500 for the Central part, so that usually kills it for the DIY’er. I don’t expect that Central price will stay at $0.46 either. Mouser continually changes their prices… I have been hit with up to 600% price increases on some of the parts that I get from them.

Toshiba has also discontinued some of their popular FET’s, namely my favorite 2SK170’s. Linear Systems offers the LSK170 as a replacement with a minimum 1,000 piece buy. That will work out for me, but for the DIY’er it would be a deal breaker.

I just wanted to mention this, because if someone is laying out PCB’s they may want to identify a cheap and easy to get replacement. The pinouts will sometimes vary from one FET to the next and if your making PCB’s that really turns into a PITA.:hmm:

Like I said before... there will be NOS parts around for a while, but these are VERY popular parts so get’em while you can.
