New Dr Bass BL158 Cab

The BL1580 that I'm having made is an 8 ohm cabinet. The power handling will be about 550w minimum, probably closer to 650w if he's using a 100w tweeter. Frequency response for my 15" deep cab will be 42hz - 20khz with about a 101db sensitivity. The 17.5" deep version will be 37hz - 20khz.

I believe that it may be available in a 4 ohm version but I'd call Marc to make sure.

I really dig your setup!!

OF COURSE you dig that set up. You do recognize that 55-02, don't you? ;)

Actually, I read this thread and was drooling over the new products Marc is coming out with. I've had my (heavily modified) Rx112 cabinets for almost two years now and still love them but his new ideas keep making great stuff look even better.

Dang, you're right!! I do like that 55-02. I'm also digging the 310/115 and the original cabs. I gotta check out what all this Dr. Bass thing is about!

How would you compare the tone to the UL115?

Let's see, if my memory serves me correctly (big "if"), the UL115 seems to be voiced a little lower, but not nearly as low as the PS115. And without the mids supplied without the 1580's mid driver. I'd say the UL115 is closer to the 1580 than the PS115.

But in all honesty, it's been awhile since I heard a UL115. Plus, my UL115 was a NYC cab with an UL driver. (Damn nice cab, though!) I'd have to hear them side-by-side.

Jesse, check out Tom B's 1x15 Shootout. His Skjold/Dr. Bass cab seems a lot like this 1580. And he's got my old NYC/UL115 in there, too.

The 8" mid is a "closed back" design that doesn't require a seperate chamber. The 6" driver is the same.

The Skjold/Dr. Bass design in the Tom B. shoot-out was a prototype for the Concert Series, if I remember correctly. The new BL1580 is in a very different cabinet with very different speakers, bracing, porting, new crossovers, etc.
I would bet that the two sound similar but noticeably different. Just guessing at this point! I'll be able to describe the differences more directly when I get my 1580 in the next couple of weeks.

AH! Gotcha. Nevermind then.

And an edit to my earlier UL115/1580 comparison. I'd say the 1580 has the same amount of low end as my old NYC/UL115.

Bruce,
Thanks for giving that a shot. The Dr. Bass cabs are very interesting. I'd be all over the stack in the OP if I was in the market for cabs. Just kicking tires b/c I like to know if there is something out there I may like better (aka dern GAS).

Shoot, my middle name is "tirekicking"!

And there's always something better over the horizen!! :help:

One of the reasons I went with Dr. Bass rather than the Carvin 1503 is history. I had a couple of Dr. Bass cabs in the past that, in hindsight, I should have kept. Another reason is value. It's a good bang for a buck, for sure. And I'm all about that!

I think it would be fun to have a "Gear Trading Club" of sorts. Guys can trade gear back and forth to see what they like. The details would have to be worked out, and it may not be feasible, but it's a fun idea anyway!

That's a pretty cool idea. I'm a good 5 hours away from trying out gear. That's a long ride 1-way to just dork around when it seems I'm always crunched for time lately.

WOW!! Sweet cab! This three-way thing is great!

Deep, firm lows. And the high and mid attenuators were very, very useful. Could this actually be a....a....a keeper?? By Golly, I think it is! :bassist:

Now all I need is a 1260 to go with it for larger shows. Or mix and match as the gig dictates. I'll be stylin'!

Copy-cat! ;)

Matt, got the 1001RB II. And ordered a 1260 non-neo from Marc with the Delta LF. Thought I'd start with a "regular" speaker and then move on to the neo if need be. So I guesss we won't be twins.

Played a gig last night in a notoriously boomy room and the GK and the 1580 were quite impressive. And now, I'd say the 1580 has more low end than my NYC/UL115. More volume for sure. I brought my Epi S1/S2 UL112 along just-in-case, but never used it. The GK and 1580 combo had plenty of volume and headroom.

I can never get a good sound on last nights' stage, but last night was the best I ever sounded. Still a little too boomy, but a "tight" boomy if that makes sense.

I was probably a little too loud on stage, but dang! Bass should be loud, right?? :ninja:

All-in-all, I'm quite pleased with my lastest rig. Now, will it last more than a month??? :help:
