New Gibson Bass in 2013

Why is it that that Gibson can only make basses with dot inlays, but the guitars have had blocks and variations thereof for ages?

I have never understood why Gibson thinks basses should only have dots while guitars can have blocks, while Fender has it the other way around.

the Triumph had blocks. just sayin'

Some years of the SG bass are trapezoid inlays. Same with the LP basses, and the old Les Paul Signature.

I was checking out my local music store the other day and saw a Gibson Explorer ($899).....looked cool as hell

My local GC has a faded/worn finish Flying V bass, also $899. It's listed on the MF & CG websites as a limited model. The store said they also had the $899 Explorer bass in what they called walnut or brown finish, but had recently sold it.

I was surprised, but I really liked the V. I had a short scale SG Fireburst once that looked great, but felt like a guitar so I got rid of it. The V is short scale too, but the design makes it feel more like a 32" medium scale which is fine with me. The nut wasn't as thin as a T-bird, but it didn't feel as wide as a P-bass. Through an Ampeg BA115 it had a lot of thump, and big a fat sound.

As a person who believes that the Les Paul was handed down by God himself to create the one and only sound of rock, I have never lusted for, nor fallen in love with a Gibson bass. And believe me when I say that I have tried so many times.

Until they really start thinking outside of the Gibson box, lipstick on a pig, or, to be PC, not to my liking.

I really thought that they were at least attempting to break new ground with the Victory. Sadly, they went right back to peeing the bed.

Something like this would have been cool for me. 3 Humbucking pickups with serial/parallel/single coil switching, 1 Volume for each pickup, 1 master tone, passive electronics. The pickups have medium output and regular soapbar (EMG 35DC) size. Body is alder, bolt-on neck is maple with maple or rosewood fretboard. Tuners are lightweight, as bridge I'd have the Schaller 2000. Fretless version as an option...

Would this idea be interesting to others?

Now THAT looks cool.

Agreed as to attempting to break new ground to a degree, but they were heavy and sounded like pewp (to me). I'd like to see a reimagined RD with a deeper cut and less weight, possibly all mahogany with graphite rods in the neck. 4 and 5 string versions. Or how about budget MM versions of the SG, TBird and RD basses (like they did with the guitars)? Won't happen, but I can dream.

I thought this ss reissue they came out with last year was a cool looking bass.

I used to have a 1961 EBO similar to this (some dummy refinished it)

It didnt really sound that great, good thump but weak output. The main thing was the neck just wasnt, to me, as comfortable and easy to play as a Fender style neck. I also had an Epiphone EBO, same thing with the neck and a crappy pickup.
