New iPhone 4 hardware

I can't decide between getting the iPhone 4 or an ipad. I currently have an iPhone 3GS, but I do like the new hardware of the 4 and would love to have the higher res screen and better camera with flash. On the other hand, I can upgrade the 3GS operating system and get most of the other features that I'm looking forward to and use the money towards an ipad. The iphone 4 should be cheaper (as far as I know I'm eligible for the full upgrade according to all I've read and what ATT's website is saying), but there isn't necessarily anything wrong with my current phone. I'm just a gadget hound (hence the username) and always like having new toys! I can't decide which I want more though! The iPhone won't be such a huge jump as the iPad, but will be used significantly more since I practically live on it for work and fun, but the iPad would be a pleasure to use around the house just casual browsing which I do often. Any suggestions fellow TBers?!
As cool as the iPad is, and as much as I GAS for tech stuff a lot, I'd see the iPad as something I'd get bored with eventually. This is just me personally, but I thought about how cool the iPad is and .... well yeah it's pretty neat but it's not very portable, so you wouldn't get as much use out of it as you would a phone. I get a ton of use out of my iPod Touch, and that's because of how portable it is.
I mean, personally I'd also factor in the fact that you'd be paying a (high) monthly bill for the iPhone, but I'm sure you're already paying this. Plus if you get the 3G iPad, that's a $30 a month additional fee (I think...) in addition to your phone bill. I don't know if you were planning on doing that, but that's something I would also factor in.
I would choose the iPhone 4, if I was in a position to pick either anyway.

Macworld did a blind evaluation of the photo and video capabilities of the iPhone 4 vs. other popular smartphones including Droid X and EVO. They threw in a couple of good point-and-shoots for comparison as well. They found that the iPhone topped all the other smartphones in picture quality. In video quality it topped even the dedicated point-and-shoots but fell just shy of beating out the 720p Flip Cam. Boy Genius had a similar conclusion and added that the Droid X had better audio.

When the iPhone comes to VZW, 2012 I believe, it will again assume it's rightful spot as undisputed ruler of the smartphone world.
I don't think any single Android device can out class an iPhone from top to bottom at this point. The Android advantage is there are several different models on a few different carriers. So while the Android OS may be catching up to the iPhone OS, it is mostly due to the wide availability. Not because it is loads better than the iPhone.
AT&T reception is terrible in my hood. It is the only reason I do not have an iPhone. I love my Droid from Motorola, but it has some catching up to do before it outclasses an iPhone.

The iphone can outclass any respectable android phone from top to bottom either. With phones like the EVO and the upcoming Droid X with far superior hardware, Apple will have a harder time coming up with more gimmicks to get people to buy when everyones android phone can truly multitask and change the backgrounds. The popular snapdragon is clocked at 1ghz and the upcoming Droid X with a separated CPU and GPU is even more powerful than that. Sprint still has the best plan out of all of the big three.
I have had my Droid OC'ed at 1.1GHz. That speed is way faster than I need it to be, so I cranked it back down to 800Mhz. Even at 800 is is lightning fast.

I got my iPhone 4 last Tuesday when AT&T began selling to walk-ins. I walked in at 10:30 and had my phone and was out in 15 minutes. However...an issue came up.
I took a few pics and some video but then every time I opened the camera after that the phone froze and rebooted. I called support and they determined that it was a hardware issue. Today I went to the Apple store and they swapped it out. Everything seems good now. Facetime is pretty nifty and has its place. The video looks awesome as do the photos. I'm going to be using that a lot with my kids for sure. Overall I'm loving the features of iOS 4 and the great speed and increased RAM of the iPhone 4. I think the GPS chip is better too...Nagivon connects very quickly. Once again Apple has scored a homerun as far as interface and the smoothness of operation goes.
Oddly enough, I also had an out-of-the-box hardware issue when I bought my 3G 2 years ago. The wifi wouldn't work and I had to trade it out for a new one. After that I had no more issues. Hopefully this will follow suit as far as no more issues goes.
There were tons of people getting help with issues of all kinds at the "Genius Bar" this morning (oh how I hate that title). Very busy and the store wasn't open for business yet...just tech support.

I got mine on Tuesday, too.
It's been great, but mine suffers from the proximity issue (while on a call).
Everything else has been great.
MUCH better than my old 3g - I only upgrade phones every two years or so.
It was either the EVO or the iPhone4, I decided the iPhone4 was more my cup of tea.
When is the fix for the crappy reception due out? Does Apple really think they can fix AT&T's poor coverage???

Do a little more research, none of those things are real issues.
That issue definitely exists but the question is whether or not it's truly an antenna issue or if its just an issue with how signal strength is displayed.

Apple came out on Friday and claimed that its an issue with the display and that its due to using a faulty formula to decide how many bars should be displayed. Their claim is that when you hold the phone with the so-called "grip of death" then it shows how many bars you should actually be seeing. Otherwise it shows an exaggerated number of bars unless you're in an area with a really strong signal. They claim that if you're in a true 5 bar area then the antenna display will not change when you "hold it wrong".
We'll find out for sure when they release their update to "fix" the issue in a week or two. I know that I have not dropped any calls so far even when holding it in the aforementioned manner.
