New iPhone 4 hardware

I was actually able to replicate the antenna issue at work the other day. When I did it, I had to hold it with both hands, with my case off.

I started to laugh because it took me having to hold it in a way that I would never hold the phone (I would have to use my tongue to operate the phone). Other than that, I use a case and haven't had a dropped call with this phone (my 3g was another story).

I did notice that when I replicated the antenna issue, I had a coworker hit the speedtest app - it couldn't even locate a server. As well, we get pretty carpy service at work (sometimes).

So it wasn't really a scientific experiment because there were too many variables that were involved.

All that matters to me is that the phone does what I need it to do. I'm not too regretful I didn't go with the EVO, but i'm still interested in Android nontheless - I may install Android in my 3g to test.

Signal strength or bar calculating, with a case it is absolutely a non-issue. And who would carry around the new glass iphone without a case, anyway? Mine has better wi fi and phone reception than my original Iphone -- much better!

I do agree with this as well, and I guess there is no solution I will say "good job" to.
Nonetheless, glass shatters. This seems to be common knowledge, at least in my mind, and it's already been proven to be a possibility on the iPhone.

There must be some better solution. I've never read a case of the iPhone 3G's plastic breaking (though I'm not sure either)

Apparently, the glass is "30 times stronger than plastic". However, I don't think the plastic had too many problems other than it being "crappy". The glass, on the other hand, just seems delicate to me. I get nervous enough holding my iPod Touch the wrong way, why make such an expensive device out of glass?
I really liked the iPhone 3GS design. I think the new design is nice, but it just seems like they focused too much on making it look nice. The glass was unnecessary IMO.

Glass is much harder to scratch than plastic. I think that was the thing. I don't know...personally I think I'd rather have plastic in a case that is less likely to shatter but more likely to get a little scratched.

This is a shattered screen.. that is possible with any of these smartphones including the previous iPhones that have glass screens and I don't want a plastic screen personally.
The glass back is new though. EDIT: I just read a little closer. This was a drop test of an empty iPhone 4 shell and it didn't shatter until the 3rd drop. Not bad for a glass screen!

I was in a class recently and the two other guys at my table both had the OB (I'd never heard of them). One guy claimed that another agent in his office has run over his phone twice in the OB and it was fine both times. It may have been a fish story, but I have no reason to believe otherwise. Those things look like tanks! I will not be volunteering my iPhone for testing though :eek:

Well yes that is true, but the second link I posted broke on an accidental drop. This could happen to anyone.
But it's true that it could happen to any of the phones, I was just questioning the decision to switch the whole phone to be made of glass (or the front and back, at least).

There are three different otterboxes each of varying protectiong and thickness. I would definitely not be going with the one that offers the most protection. I'm guessing that's the one that he has. The midlevel one is a bit thicker than a lot of cases but not nearly as cumbersome as the thickest one. The silicon case that they offer looks pretty decent too but I'm not a huge fan of the silicon skins.
