Hi everyone! I'm Hyrulegal ^_^, I'm 17 and I've been playing Bass for 3/4 months now. I got a dean edge for my birthday, and now I'm rarely seen without it in my hands because I'm always practising. I remember walking into a music shop with my sister (I went with her because she was looking at acostics) and she caught me looking at the bass guitars "you know, you can ask one of the guys who work here take it down for you" So I did (though I was embaressed about it because I never played a bass before) so awkwardly I began to pluck at the the strings , after getting used to the thicker strings I started to play a few songs, (from the acostic guitar my sis let me play on) I then played love cats and it sounded great! Feel in love with it ever since.

philzbass here just thought I'd drop by and say hi. I've been playing bass for about 16 years now, wow, never really thought of that, I should be alot better.
Before bass I took piano lessons, I also play guitar and sing.
I'm kind of a one man band type and enjoy writing and recording by myself.
I like listening to alot of different kinds of music and trying to play as many as I possibly can. I think the more you can appreciate different types of music the better it will make you no matter what instrument your playing.

), classical (chamber/symphonic). I listen to everything. I mainly play at various churches (mine included), with my worship band, and anywhere else I'm needed.
My current/most used set-up:
Carvin walnut 6-string into 1960's ampeg portaflex
But I'm looking into EA iAMP 500/800 and EA cabs, or AG cabs, or LDS custom cabs
I also use:
Yamaha fretless 4 sting
Zeta Jazz Standard Uprite
Carvin half Stack (BP500, 2x10, 1x15)
I also play:
Guitar
Mandolin
Piano (kinda)
Banjo
Other things with strings
I am also awaiting the birth of baby #1 and I like to homebrew...

I've been playing bass for 3 months now and I've got a Yamaha RBX 170 which I've already broken twice... first the neck and then the output jack... oh dear...
So far I've just been playing along with records (tabs have been very useful) and taking lessons once a week but it would be great to be in a real band. People here in Northern Finland seem to be hard-core heavy metal fans, so it's really difficult to find a band with a different style. I've been planning on moving to UK next summer, I hope I'll have better luck there.
Usually I just listen to indie/alternative music but if a song has a nice and groovy bass line I don't really care what genre it belongs to.

There's not dedicated forum for welcome and introductions so I figured I'd just Bogart some space in this forum. I'm James but you can call me Kroy. I've been playing bass for a little over 10 years. I took a few years off of really intense playing to go to school and get an Undergrad and Master's degree in music composition. Now that I'm out of school I'm back to playing bass a lot more and really loving it.
My personal goal is to make a living as a musician either by playing gigs, recording, or as a teacher. Right now I'm a guitar/bass/voice instructor at a music school and I'd love to add some gigging to my schedule. Unfortunately my gear isn't really up to par for anything larger than a coffee house. I have 2 basses both bought when I was just learning so they're both cheap and a little dicey. I have an old Ibanez GT (precursor to the SG series I think) which was made fretless by someone who didn't really know what they were doing. The neck is a mess and they put round-wound strings back on the neck so the fretboard is completely chewed up. I didn't know the round-wound strings were a problem until recently. The bass that I actually play and teach on is a short scale Danelectro Longhorn (I think). I bought it for like 200 dollars in college because it was a better bass than I had and I was a broke college student. Amazingly it doesn't too bad but the electronics on it leave quite a bit to be desired. My current amp is a Fender BXR 100W. It's actually a nice sounding amp.
I've never been much of a 'gear head' so that's one thing I've been educating myself about lately. Amps, pick ups, pots, effects, heads, cabs, so on and so forth. I'm in the market for some new gear that would allow me to play bigger shows. I want a better quality bass and have been playing everything I can get my hands on for the last 4 months. I also want a new amp head and cab so I've been doing research on those. So don't be surprised if you see me all over this place asking questions that may seem ridiculous. I'm impressed by the little I've seen so far and I'm looking forward to becoming a member of the community.

im robert from the philippines,ive been playing for a year now. im still an aspiring bass player though ive started playing for quite a while but i still need a lot of improvements because all i know are the basics and i still have to learn a lot. i dont have proper training from a teacher because most of us here dont have a chance to be trained by teacher.and its seldom that you can find a music school here. i registered here so that i can get some techniques and most importantly the theory of music in bass guitar playing.
all i have is a bass guitar, i dont an amplifier. im practising bass w/o an amp. i only have the chance to play with an amp when the my band jams on a studio. you maybe laughing at my situation but this doesnt stop me from playing what i love most...

I'm Willem from Belgium. I play bass for only a little over a year. I started out playing Spanish guitar at the academie in my town when I was 9 (I'll turn 21 in May). Later on I started playing electric guitar. And when I was 15 I started my first band. It was supposed to be metal... Hahaha! But anyway, we played together for 4 years, when I got involved in another band. It was, and still is, a Metallica Tribute and due to circumstances, I took up the bass. A few months ago I quited the band where I played guitar in. And now I'm a fulltime bassist... I then bought myself an LTD B2005 (30th anniversary edition), an Ashdown MAG 300 with a 4x10 cabinet and two Xotic bass effects: bb preamp and rc booster. When I was looking around here I noticed the 'pedal board' topic, and saw that not that many people (no-one?) use them Xotics. Well, they rock believe me! Now I'm looking for a decent wireless... (but I can't find the topic about them, please help!)

hello, my name is chris and i live in tucson arizona, im 15 (one week away from 16) and i just moved here from lithuania. Ive been playing bass for a couple years now, part of the reason i joined this was to get used to all the parts of the bass. After playing it for a while i felt like i had to get used to what all this terminology meant.
Having been on the "net" since 1991 and I still have no clue what to say.. Sooo:

Anyway, have at me.. I'm used to the n00b to the forums hazing in fact I would feel ignored if I didn't receive it..
Though, I came here in hopes to learn, specifically, what type of setup I should look at having never even touched a bass..... never. When it comes to music, I "hear" the bass prodominately over anything else (aside from the bass drum and then drums -- but, I really don't feel confident I have the coordination to play drums). My uncle plays the guitar, has for awhile now. He told me years ago "thats a good thing" that I can "hear the drums then the bass"..."most people 'hear' the guitar". He either never told me why it was a "good thing" or I just don't remember. Sooo, incase any of that is important I thought I would mention it.
If someone wouldnt mind PMing me with the "n00b" thread, I would really appreciate it, since I cant seem to find it? Or is this strictly devoted to novices, experts and touring pro's? If thats the case, then, PM me with a link to some other forums better equipped to handle a n00b. Thank you whoever in advance.

I guess Im in a similar boat to HexLuther. Im the noobiest of noobs. I dont know any music thoery and dont even own or have played a bass (although the courier says it should arrive today). Its always been the bass lines that stand out to me when I hear music, even before I knew they were played by a bass guitar.
Ive been overwhelmed with the amount of info on this site and wish I discovered it earlier. My heads already mushed with the music theory I need to learn before I even pick up an instrument.
Im 32 and feel I have left it all a bit late, but have been wanting to learn bass for a few years now and maybe its the mid-life crisis making me take the plunge!
