Hey, I'm Alec (yes with a c not a typo). I've been playing bass for just over 10 months. I wanted to play drums, but my dad said it was too loud, so I bought a Fender Bass starter kit and have had trouble putting it down every day since then.

Hello, My Name is Josh and i live in west Warwick, RI
I was referred to these forums by a friend of mine. I have played the guitar for like, 8 years and i just picked up a bass for the first or second time within the past Month. so i probably won't have much to offer you guys, i guess you could say im here to learn as much as i can.

To the reason for this post:- I'm a big Northern Soul fan. Picked up a track the other day by the Montclairs. It's called - 'Hung Up On Your Love'. Man, the bassline is so damned gorgeous that I had to pull over in my car to listen again and again. During the chorus the bass is playing a counter melody to the vocalist and its just SO uplifting. I recommend you try and search out that track, and if anyone knows anything about the player I'd love to hear it!

Been playing since late 1989 when I was still in high school. Performed with Rock and Metal(ish) bands from 1991-2002. Have recorded a couple CDs with bands and done a ton of recording on my own - alot of electronic stuff, and guitar stuff. I have recently joined a band as the lead guitarist - which took a bit to get used to. And more recently, I've felt drawn back to playing bass.
I'd say that my biggest influences as far as bass go are Les Claypool, Steve Harris, Geddy Lee, and Flea (not that I sound like any of them). But actually, I did have someone tell me after a gig that I sounded like Claypool - even though that was a gig where I broke a string... heh! Back in 1992, I actually was doing ushering at the Warfield in San Francisco, and who comes up to me to have me show em to their seats - Les Claypool and Larry LaLonde! They had nose bleed seats, about four rows from the very back - and were casin' the joint for the gig the following month.
Another time, I got the weirdest of compliments, at least I thought it was one at the time - some guy says to me after the gig
"I didn't know you were bangin' Steve Harris's wife?".
I just looked at him, perplexed.

hello all- just started playing bass this year. I would say my biggest influence is les claypool. The very first time i heard primus was six years ago and it absolutely blew my mind- never heard anything like it before. The more primus i heard, the more i learned what the bass could be.
I never seriously thought about getting a bass until last year when a friend of mine who plays drums and another friends who plays guitar started jamming together (i didn't play any instrument before bass). They had a spare bass that i would try to play along with them, and that just kindof lit a fire under me. I always wanted to play bass, and so after christmas i used some money i got and bought my first bass- a very purple Yamaha RBX270 and a behringer 120 watt amp.
I have not had any real instruction- i taught myself how to play for a while then recently bought a Hal Leonard bass method book- which helped a bit.

ive been in this forum for a while but i never bothered to introduce myself lol
i started to play bass 2 weeks after i started playing guitar and ive been playing bass for year and 3 months more or less.i bought one 5 months ago(my guitar teacher had a 5 string bass and i really liked the tone\feel of it,but now i definitely prefer my 4 stringer)
i always liked the "background melodies" in songs (i never knew it was a bass guitar till i played one,silly me)
anyway,my main influences are steve harris,lemmy and geezer butler.they made me want to play bass basically
instead of slapping with my thumb,i play regular fingerstyle,but i have no mercy so i get a slap sound quite easily.i play in the bridge unless i want that slap sound
well,sometimes i get bruises on my right hand fingers for that,but i dont care
ive been using a lot of equipment (this is a true joke) :
a 100watts,10 years old keyboard amp with no EQ (i burned it down,oops)
computer speakers set (it has a 3" subwoofer for bass playing-farts really nicely if i put volume higher than 9 oclock)
also 2 headphone sets (also got destroyed from my "mellow" distortion)
i finally got a REAL amp (ibanez SW35) 3 months ago.i use it for both guitar and bass with a zoom dist. pedal (also for bass)
now i learn by myself (my guitar teacher was a guitar TEACHER and a bass PLAYER,he couldnt teach bass for ****)
im a lefty that plays right handed instruments

I REALLY, REALLY want to make music a career, so don't hate on me for making music that is palpable. I play for myself when it's for myself. But Josh Loves the Kids. Give 'em what they want, and you can make a living off that hobby of yours.
