Poplar is actually a very cool wood to work with, and with sharp carbide cutters it machines very smoothly with almost no chatter and maintains precise dimensions throughout the cuts.
People assume that CNC is easier and cheaper, but in actuality, the sheet goods used for CNC manufacture are a little different than your average plywood, the thickness and ply uniformity are held to much tighter tolerances otherwise the rabbits and dados will be the wrong depth from the face. Since we also do some custom inlay work, this becomes especially critical to the final surface finish.
Different species and grades of wood for different applications.
