New MXR pedals

Well I ordered a M89 Overdrive yesterday. I had borrowed my guitarist Pork Loin and absolutely loved it and I was going to go that route so I'm hoping I didn't make a mistake ordering the M89.

To be honest most of the clips I've heard of the M89 have not impressed me but then I heard the clip of Juan playing and thought it sounded really good. In that clip the clean channel seemed to come thru maybe a bit better than I recall on the PL and it seemed to get a bit more gritty... should have it by Friday.

The Pork Loin is softer in the clipping the bass overdrive is a bit more frontal/aggressive. The MXR Bass Overdrive has more gain. The Bass Overdrive is more plug and play while the Pork Loin allows more tweaking.

Because of the mix the Bass Overdrive retains more of the low bass (the bass you feel more than you hear).
Both are very nice pedals.

This is on a micro level. Played in a mix, one could not tell the difference.

My pedal is out for delivery! I ordered Tuesday from bassstringsonline.com and payed the extra couple buck for Flat Rate Priority because I wanted it for my gigs this weekend. Two days from California to Iowa, nice. Should have it here in the next couple hours!

Laurent, your comparisons are reassuring, thanks. The difference in the gain and allowing the low end to pass, even if it subtle would have been about the only things I would have liked changed on the PL.

Okay, been play around with the M89 for the last hour or so.

First its really dark... darker than I recall the PL (which is dark). I recall the PL clean channel as being actually clean (though having it's own voicing) but maybe it wasn't.... this definitely isn't, there is distortion on the clean channel and I REALLY wish there wasn't.

My J Basses clean tone is similar to Juan's bass on the clip but when I turn the pedal on I can't get the pedal to retain the clean sound like his does in that demo video. My clean blend sounds like it has a blanket thrown over it. I wish the tone knob would make it the slightest bit brighter.

Sounds really good after my MXR Bass Envelope Filter for synth tones. Being that it's darker sound does make it a bit more tweeter friendly. The distortion sounds good and is really smooth, can get way overboard for my taste past 10 o'clock.

Not sure it's better than my current dirt pedal which is the Xotic BB Preamp (guitar version) but it's growing on me. Kind wish I had order the Pork Loin as I know that really worked well for me but I'll give it a while longer.

I'd def give it a month or so. I remember when I got the MXR bass fuzz deluxe, I didn't dig it that much. Especially live. But then I started playing with it and learning how to actually use it. I dig it now. It only took a couple months hehe. I'm not trying to say you don't know how to use it, just that I know for me, some pedals take on different voicings after I've played them for a while.

+1
I find fuzz-overdrive-distortion pedals always take longer to learn to how properly use and love. It's probably from the possibility of them completely cutting out all of your lows and making you inaudible in a band setting.

I usually agree with this but since I've gotten the setup I have now, I'm happy and heard. Between the B7K, ODB3, OCD and my newly added hardwire CM2, sounds abound. I was hoping to add a modded boss SD1 tonight but to no avail. I messed the mod up at some point. Poop
