New Nickelback album

I was CD shopping in a local independent shop and they had some band playing that sounded pretty good to me. Good hooks, good singing and mixed nicely.

Turns out it was the latest Nickleback disc.

I'm not a massive fan of Nickelback, but I never really understood the insanely massive amount of hate that they seem to be on the receiving end of 96% of the time.

It's because when they aren't churning out the same type of middle-of-the-road Metallica-lite radio rock single after single they release some of the most cringe-worthy and mind-numbing songs in modern rock.

For an example, listen to such classic tunes as:

Something in Your Mouth
(sample lyric: You look so much cuter with something in your mouth)

Figured You Out
(sample lyric: I love your pants around your feet, I love the dirt that's on your knees)

Rockstar
(sample lyric: The girls come easy and the drugs come cheap, we'll all stay skinny 'cause we just won't eat).

Ahh Nickelback. Being from Vancouver, I knew their music before they made it big. Saw them play in a curling rink to a sub-100 audience. Not wanting to let grunge die, I listened to them as a reasonable facsimile. I even hoped they'd hit the big time, & my wish came true. I'm so sorry everyone. :( :D

This wonderful chestnut of a thread.

:smug:

yes daniel, much more like Silver Side Up than the other releases. Nothing quite like a 70's SVT turned to near 'splosion levels into an 8x10.

:bassist:

as for their lyrics.... context is a novel idea huh? I know the water flows the opposite direction in the bowl in some places on the planet, but there is still the idea of "looking at things in the context that they were written", that is still a global idea right? :smug:

Dude, WHO CARES? :rollno:

It's music a lot of people like, and presumably makes them happy listening to it, which is NEVER a bad thing. They make reasonably well crafted, radio friendly rock songs. Ya know, sometimes music is just entertainment and doesn't pretend to be "art".

as far as them ripping themselves off, chad kroeger admits to this. when he had a hit single, he interrogated everyone to figure out WHY they liked it so they could copy it for future success.

with that said, i enjoyed the silver side up album. when they were still honest. when the lyrical content was about poverty and struggle. not "i wanna be a rock star, i ****ed your girlfriend yeaeaeaea"

they have long since lost all credibility as far as im concerned.

I really have a tough time believing that anybody on this forum used to playing in front of 25 to 200 people would tell Nickelback to take a hike if offered the bass spot. A world tour playing in arenas with tons of pyro to 10,000+ fans each night or suffer in obscurity for the love of the music. I know what my choice would be.
Believe what you will but I can honestly say that personal integrity would prevail if I were asked to join a mind-numbingly sh*tty band like Nickelback. I'd rather never play bass again.

Hehe. This made me LOL for some reason.

Also, why haven't I seen hate threads on AC/DC if the big gripe is that the songs are all the same?

Good question :hmm:

I didn't read through the thread, but this album title has been done, and most likely much better.
