New Origin Effects DCX Bass

I can’t really do a direct comparison as my DCX is packed away. The DCX is more transparent, the Gold colours the sound even when the drive is turned down (at least for some Adapt settings). Gold is also more mids heavy. DCX is (unsurprisingly) a better bass overdrive, and I’d recommend the Halcyon Green over the Gold. But the Gold works better than the M-EQ, which can lose a lot of low end.

Thanks Derek!

I really want to utilize the drive for the DCX, but it is so dadgum good on the EQ side, I can't not utilize it in that way. Really wish they would have made it a two channel pedal with a separate drive level. They do that, they'll sell as many of them as they want to.

If you are looking for an extra Origin drive that isn’t another DCX, I’d definitely go Green first

One of the few pedals I haven't packed away is my Super Vintage, so I hooked it up with the Halcyon Gold. That's another winning combination. Just like with the Green, the Super Vintage sounds better to me when pushed with the Gold. Super Vintage also does a better job of shaping the sound for bass than the simple tone control.

Have a couple questions. I have a cali76 I use as an always on. Amp is a mesa subway.

I’m curious if the dirty side of this pedal sounds good coming out of an amp xlr (no cab sim) in other words does it need to go through a cab sim or the cab have to be mic’d up for it to sound great?

also as a clean boost/eq. I’m not totally understanding it. Are the low and high filter like a low pass and highpass filter or an eq that you can boost or cut?

does it add noticeable tube warmth?

I’m not looking to use this for super extreme sounds. But I’m curious I’m what’s it’s capable of as I can’t try one without buying one. And the demo videos don’t seem super helpful (just different playing styles and basses) I’m actually not familiar with the 610 it’s based on at all. But If the clean boost side can get in the ballpark of something like a Avalon VT-737sp I’d love to know.

Hi I wanted to ask a little advice, I have a darkglass VMT, but I am attracted by the dxc bass how would it behave compared to him? I would like to point out that in my chaining I have cali76 cb and a noble di thank you for your comments!!

It just another EQ/distortion pedal if you like how it sounds get it and try it. Please don't do solely on reviews (which has been done to death here), some things you have to experience..

Different kind of breakup from both pedals, they should work fine together. I find the DCX more dynamic, it’s breakup is much more dependant on the input volume.

a cali76 cb, DCX bass and the noble should pair really well together and sound fantastic.

I usually have that set up but with a khan vtdi instead of the noble.

+1

I guess it would sound much more natural as well compared to the Darkglass.

I don’t have any real experience with Darkglass other than briefly messing around with some stuff that wasn’t mine…

but I think of that combo (cali76, dcx, tube DI) is basically a portable studio sound set up for live playing. Although today I just ran the khan vtdi by itself direct to FOH and it sounded great.

I'm now a DCX Bass owner. It arrived today. I got right on it and tried it with several basses. It's really nice with passive instruments, that need some other kind of EQ other than amp tone controls. It changes their voices very nicely. It makes otherwise undisctinguished-sounding instruments much classier and professional-sounding. I've not pulled out any active basses, will get to those tomorrow. The DCX indeed does add some excellent color, especially with Drive way up on the EQ setting. It's definitely noticeable. I ran it into heavier crunch on the OD side and didn't particularly care for the grainy top, even with the treble reduced. I may like that grit more with some of my other basses. That 75% or so before the grit gets more extreme, from clean, up to the area where harmonics start becoming more apparent is a wonderful range to play with. I'll check back in tomorrow after I have had a chance to play more.

By the way, I ordered mine direct from Origin Effects' website. I received it in less than 48 hours after checkout. Free shipping and no sales tax. OE does their order fulfillment from Shure's big music distribution warehouse in Olive Branch, MS, not very far from Memphis. So it went via FedEx, obviously. Very pleased with the purchase process. Anyone who's interested in Origin Effects pedals, do consider buying direct from OE's website.

Incoming DCX Bass. I am reading, and I am on page 15... and... :wacky:

Short version of question: Any good luck pairing the DCX Bass with the Super Vintage for getting great heavy tones? Care to share advice/settings?

Cheers!

And here is the dreaded long version :)!

Help me have spicier dreams tonight... :rollno:

I am hoping that the DCX Bass will give me great heavy tones running into my Super Vintage, AND the green light to sell/trade my Dark Glass X7. Will it? Will it? :hyper:

Amateur guy who records sweet nothing heavy tunes here (guitar, bass and keys, drums from computer). I sometimes play Drop C with guitar, so I rely on my Dingwall NG5 to hit that low C.., occasionally, otherwise, mostly in Drop D with a P, J or Stingray. I know; the day I realized I had more basses than guitars, I was like "... man, you barely know how to play the guitar... what is going on here?" I blame Steve Harris!

My super Vintage is not getting me to the heavy tones going in my head by itself (falling just a bit short). Enter my decision to purchase the DCX BASS to run into my Super Vintage :bassist:.

I used a real tube Ampeg PT-20 (with pedals) for a couple of years, and have been using the Origin Super Vintage since its release. No offence to Dark Glass fans, but the X7, even with the awesome studio trick up its sleeve, is sounding less and less inspiring to me.

I posted this a while ago to get some input on my tone with the X7 going into the Super Vintage - folks kindly encouraged me and said it sounded OK. I am having second thoughts...

What should I expect :nailbiting:? The anticipation is eating me alive !

For what it is worth, here is my rig - PART B of pedal board:

Part A - please note X7 and SV come after all pedals in parts A and B

I rarely use my Berg amp and Cab anymore - on the selling list soon!

Here is another 'jingle' with the X7 running into the Super Vintage:

Hey, I am in my 50s...... Go easy on this metal dude !

Cheers!

First off, this might be the most enthusiastic post I have ever read. The tone, the emojis... your excitement is contagious lol

I haven't tried the particular combination of pedals you mention (I don't own a Super Vintage), but I really doubt the DCX bass is going to get you the heavy tones you want based on the examples you linked. The DCX Bass is a light to medium overdrive, and tons of folks seem to be using it for EQ only (no drive). Sure, you can push it, but it's never going to sound as heavy as the Darkglass stuff. It's not designed to. So if you are finding your X7 uninspiring for heavy tones, I don't think a DCX Bass is the solution. The new MBD from Damnation Audio or the upcoming drop of Broughton Audio's Calamity Fuzz will get you close to that heavy sound. Plenty of stuff from Fuzzrocious, too.

Thanks Erithon!

OK, I hear you. If the DCX indeed is not able to push the SV into mayhem, no worries, I have a mobile/headphone board (again pulling double guitar/bass duties) on which I have no bass specific preamp or drive - I could just bump off a pedal and use the DCX there.

Right now, I am using the guitar-centric Revival Drive when I play bass with this board (thanks largely to the 'blend' knob - Origin Effects rules!). Amp-sim on the Iridium turned permanently off: cab-sim only. It's not ideal, but gets the job done for practice/noodling. Here it is:

I bet I can make a sardine out of the DCX and fit it on this board! On the contrary, if it does deliver the goods (Nate Navarro seemed to get pretty heavy tones out of it), then:

Good luck! I think the DCX Bass is brilliant. For context: I've had scores of dirt pedals pass through my hands; not only has the DCX Bass stuck around, but it sees live play on a weekly basis. I truly hope it works out for you.
