New Origin Effects DCX Bass

Interesting, "dense" sounds like a positive to me, what exactly do you mean by that?
I felt i thickened my tone and i felt it took away the "growl" and felt thicker or "heavier" to play. I don't mean heavy as distortion. Like everything in audio, it's all about the mids and i felt that's the part the pedal missed out on.
But please, i'm here to bag the DCX. I can understand why so many people love it. It's just not my thing.

Yeah the kids can be o find the DCX more mud forward if you dial back the bass and treble. When playing active I boost my mids, also for a bit of mids, I use my 4OTLF center dist frequencies around the mud point and just boost that. It works very well..

If you happen to play electric guitar too, you might be interested in this ;)

I just blew my mind with this: I matched my newly arrived DCX Boost ALMOST IDENTICAL to my Marshall Guv'nor reissue pedal (the first and one of the most convincing 'JCM 800 in a Box' pedal, recently reissued by Marshall). BOTH BOOSTED BY A FORTIN GRIND, (cause, METAL...).

Yup, that is how much gain there is inside the lovely DCX Bass! When I boost them, I am having a hard time telling them a part in my DAW. Boosting a boost... who would have thunk?

CAVEAT: The DCX requires 'JCM like-frequencies' boosted - which I did on my Empress ParaEQ (mid and high range, medium Q, both by about 3-4db.

What does Origin say about this? Here is what I put together:

1. From Origin Effects FQA - section for DCX and DCX Bass:

"What's the difference between the DCX BOOST and DCX BASS?

The DCX BOOST and DCX BASS are similar pedals, one optimised for guitar, one optimised for bass. The DCX BASS’s H.F. controls works at a significantly higher frequency than that of the DCX BOOST, boosting important parts of a bass guitar signal without getting in the way of guitar, vocals or other mid-focused instruments."

2. From an Origin Effects forum post:

3. Again, from Origin Effects - FQA section for DCX and DCX Bass (sound advice I say!)

"The two pedals are quite closely related, with the biggest difference being the H.F. control frequency, which is significantly higher on the DCX BASS. Because the response is completely flat with this control in the 12:00 position, the difference between the pedals will be more obvious the more you cut or boost the H.F. With more subtle settings, either pedal should work very well for both instruments. The short answer: whichever is your primary instrument, that’s the pedal you should buy."

Snagged 2nd-hand a DCX Bass with only test an try expectations, and wow.

The EQ side of things is a solid contender for a spot in my always-on signal chain. Dig the smooth saturation, esp pushed a bit by compressor and other pedals beforehand. As been noticed, a boost will bring the EQ mode into mild overdrive territory, guess the adaptative circuitry is fully working there. It's quite convincing at home, would be curious using this pushed EQ mode as an overdrive in a band mix, while retaining this polished and tastefully saturated console tone when the boost's off. Might rely on boost's (mids) voicing to be used this way.

Very interesting pedal !

i have two and use one as a heavy overdrive and it's great in a band mix. it's now my go to pedal for that. i use the other one for clean or as a sligthly saturated drive.

Yeah noticed your setup as well. Testing and trying different options i already got. Pushing the DCX with my Broughton Quicksilver and Monocomp been pretty rewarding, and providing useful extra mids. Studio Mini on top is icing on the cake, might use this one as my 'overdrive switch' in this setup. Curious about how the DCX will handle other pedals, stacker's delight it is !

Off topic a bit, but i just put a Vintage BassRig in front of my board that ive put together specifically for headphones and remain verily impressed. This is a reaaaly nice preamp. Ive got a Halcyon i am going to add later- i dunno- this sounded great with the four string, but over cans at least, i can get my 5 string Sadowsky to present a really good B without a whole lot of twiddling.IMG_0162.jpeg

U need ballerina toes with that thang. Tippy toe tap dance, as it were. Pretty sure I’d step on the wrong thing in boots.

Looks oddly similar to the new SolidGoldFX Beta V bass preamp pedal, but almost double the price. Is it me or Origin Effects pedals are on the overpriced side of things?

I don't think so...

UA610 preamp isn't an overdriven tube guitar amp...

The Origin Effects line has never been the least expensive solution to needs in the market. However, they have consistently delivered superior sonic performance in all areas they have undertaken. Does everything work well for Bass...no. But, those they make for Bass are top shelf.
