New RHCP! "Dark Necessities"

Nice enough, but doesn't seem to have much of their usual energy. Like RHCP for listening to while gardening. Seems like I've heard it before too, even the lyrics seemed familiar, what other RHCP song does it copy?

The first RHCP album I heard was 'Uplift Mofo Party Plan' (introduced to me by my then drummer) and I was instantly hooked, it was great. Then came 'Mother's Milk' which (IMHO) is another great recording only to be bettered (dare I say 'utterly blown away'?) by 'BSSM'! Man, that album was on repeat on my stereo for months it was so freaking good! I learned every single bass line and most of the guitar parts, I was so hooked! Now I can't even bring myself to listen to them - I lasted about 40 secs on that new track before I had to turn it off. Too sad...
:(

Hey guys, sorry to derail the the thread a bit, but since some of you have commented on Flea's tone, does anyone know what he uses to record his albums in terms of gear? I've heard it's not the same as his well-documented live rig, and since he always has a pretty nice tone on his albums, I'm curious to know what exactly does the magic.

You can dislike it all you want but the reasoning is off, it's not 1987 or 1991 anymore.
It's not 2000 either but they're still using the same formula and playing the same crap. Their songs all sound the same.

In their early years they changed it up, and at least that stuff kicked ass. None of this newer stuff kicks ass. Sorry folks.

Although Californication holds up, it was the beginning of the end for me. I hated "Scar Tissue" and "Porcelain" and took them as a huge indicator of where they were headed (I hate being right sometimes); shortly after I heard Anthony thought Porcelain was their best song ever and I knew. I didn't know how but I knew. It started with more backing vocals from John than we ever needed, and those got louder in the mix as time went on, right in step with the amount of cheesy music overtaking anything cool. I think I like a part of a song or two on "By The Way" but cannot take whatever else they turn into, and I like one song on "Stadium Arcadium".

I'll give this one another listen. The last album wasn't terrible I just have no interest in it. I applaud bands doing what they want - even the greats have albums that suck... but they should at least incorporate more of the great older stuff into live shows. I saw them in 1999 or 2000 and it was insanely good; again about 4 years back and they played only 5 good songs. I sat for the rest. It's OK to write new/different stuff, I just don't know that you should try to stand on it without enough shout outs to what got you where you are.

Maybe/hopefully they'll stray away from chasing the teeny-bopper girl demographic but maybe they're just smart and growing the next gen of groupies...

I like it. I'm a fan of all their music. I like that they actually change a bit in each album, but keep their over all sound. You know it's RHCP when you hear it. This song sounds a bit more modern, but in a good way. I preordered the album. If only I had some Lolla tickets to see them this summer...

Some tend to think they don't change enough, then some think they've changed too much, but just don't like what they've changed into. There's nothing wrong with that. Like what you like. I appreciate all of their music.

Flea sounds like he's using his Jazz bass on this one. What do you guys think? It's definitely not the same as his live tone. I wonder what amp he's gone with for this album.

wow ... since Californication they really got deeper in the pop music... looks like they'll never do another "One hot minute" the most weird album for them ... I guess too much drugs lead to that.

All these comments complaining that 'its not like their first four albums, BSSM was their last good album blah blah blah"

They formed in 1983. It is now 2016. They are different people now, with different lives, and therefore playing different music. Not every band wants to be Iron Maiden and release the same sound for 30 years.

BSSM is my favourite album by far, but I mean come on, give them a break. They want to play different music, they can do whatever they want. I think this song is a bit boring, but you can obviously hear the modern edge to it, and that they are doing something a little different.

Yeah but ... it lacks the RHCP energy. It is like they are 50 and on meds and think they should play simpler because it is more mature and say more with less ... at one point you loose what made you different from the other and this is what is happening.

I find it funny that the same people that want them to just "sound the same" as they did when they made their classic albums (of which they still did well into the 2000s despite the idiocy of this thread) also accuse them of "trying to recapture the magic" as it were of those albums, and then also accusing them of "changing their sound too much."

So to be clear, most of the people in here want RHCP to sound like Mother's Milk or BSSM, and tread new water, and not make the same album they've made in the past, all while channeling the energy of their classic albums.

So which is it?

The answer is none of the above. They should just make the music they're gonna make and you either support or you don't. If you want Mother's Milk or BSSM, there's a great way to get that. It's called your CD collection or iPod or whatever.

For the record, I liked the song. It's different. You can definitely hear the DangerMouse influence on production (I've been a fan since his DangerMouse and Jemini days, but I'm not exactly in love with everything he's ever done). It's different while still sounding like RHCP and I for one like that they're still growing and evolving as artists after 30+ years. We all should be so lucky.

My one complaint would probably be that Chad's drums really don't sound like Chad Smith (as pointed out by someone very early on in this thread). They don't sound bad. In fact I quite like the more "breakbeat" feel to them (again probably DangerMouse influenced), but they don't sound like a drummer who has a very signature sound.

The context of this track in respect to the album is ultimately what's going to define this as an OK track or a great track.

I find it funny that people find it funny that some people don't like what they've been coming up with. And that they think it means those people want BSSM or Mothers Milk again. I don't think I read any posts that said that.

What I think I DO hear people saying, if I read between the lines a little, is that they know full well what this band is capable of - and they're disappointed that they're just not presenting it. They're devolving as opposed to evolving.

Get more awesome with time, not more lifeless, and more repetitive. I can pull a bunch of tunes up that this song sounds just like from their last 15-20 years of music. So can anyone else who knows the Chili Pepper catalog. Try and do that with their first 5 albums. They just kept coming up with new kinds of awesome.

My favorite band evolution I think has to be Blink 182. I haven't been following them, but I know the last album my wife bought of theirs was a clear departure from what they were doing into total awesomeness. Pretty sure there were no hits off that album, but to me nowadays that's almost proof they're doing something right :). Artistically.

I'll say it over and over, kudos to the RHCP for bringing in millions. No kudos for artistic expression, from me at least. But I'm only one of billions of opinions on this.

I LOVE Real Men Don't Kill Coyotes (their 1st ever album) Flee's solo on that song is amazing, all the bass lines are definitive. I saw that band at Boston's The Rat in 1987. As Anthony announced that night, they were "the best (fng) band in the world". It's been down hill ever since.
This sounds like the influence of Kendric Lamar: adult contemporary piano chords, melancholy, "soulful" (ha) and a bass line someone's baby brother can play. Oh well.

For the record, at least one post per page has mentioned Mother's Milk or BSSM and how they can't recapture that magic or should. Or just mentions that this doesn't sound like "classic" RHCP (which is the same thing in other words). So I didn't assume what anyone said. I just repeated the gist of a large chunk of the comments that were written in the same language I speak, read, and can comprehend.

So not sure what you want from me there.

Blink 182 "completely" changed their sound on a dime and literally alienated a huge chunk of their fan base (me included) after Dude Ranch so I'm not sure that literally one of the worst (in my opinion) examples of a band "evolving" their sound could be held up as a good example.

We'll agree to disagree I guess. I respect your opinion (truthfully no sarcasm in that statement). I've always known you to be a respectful, intelligent person on here Joe so I'm not trying to fight, but I just whole-heartedly disagree and I think this thread is mostly filled with confused people that don't have the slightest inkling of what they want from this band other than to judge them based on the fact that they don't sound like 1991 anymore.

There are plenty of comments here that are well thought out and I can see how someone might feel the way they feel, but an overwhelming number of comments are directly out of the poster's anus.
