New RHCP! "Dark Necessities"

I thought it was pretty decent myself. Is it my favorite song of theirs ever? No. But I thought it was pretty cool...not everything they do has to be frantic dick-swinging funkmetal.
But I kind of resent when people think that just because they like something, nobody else should be able to dislike it. We all have opinions and not all of us like the same things. That said, I can assure you that none of those guys give a rat's ass what you think.

That genre was massively popular in the late 80s to early 90s. RHCP were probably the main reason why. Many heavy bands started to toy around with getting "funky". Like hair metal, most of it didn't age well.
I don't know why some people have a problem with people once liking them, and then not liking them now. They're a different band now. And we're allowed to not like them anymore. Same as some people like them now, and don't really like their music from 20 years ago. It's quite different ya know. I think we're all smart enough to realize bands change, and evolve. We don't have to BS anybody though and say we still like or love them now, do we?
I loved Rush up until whatever came after a Farewell to Kings. 2 or 3 albums after that I stopped buying and listening.
And a final note, I think former Chili Pepper fans, or should I more accurately say - people who have been RHCP from the start - know that they're capable of much more than what they're currently putting out. A lot of people fell in love with the band for their energy, angst, and fun loving, eff everybody attitude - that's pretty much gone. Their newer music is incredibly lacking in any of the stuff a lot of us originally loved about the band.
No need to get upset about us not liking them any more. They're finding a whole bunch of new love - which is awesome for them. They're not losing any sleep over losing any of their old fans either, I'm quite certain.
The RHCP members kicked substance problems, they grew up, got rich, got spiritual in some cases, and some became dads. I'd wager that has a lot to do with the changes. People change. I don't think the punk/funk Chilis could have lasted for forever. It was a youth thing in my opinion.
Of course I have no problem when you or others stopped liking them, or if they still do. I liked them for awhile longer than you but nobody has the exact same taste in music. I just think they lost something with Frusciante probably the same way you think they lost something when they went for the radio-friendly adult rock stuff. To my ear there just aren't any guitar parts to speak of anymore, which is fine I suppose since they're not the first band in history to relegate it to a background instrument.

Shaw them last tour a couple of times and they went back far both of the shows. Police helicopter far...
Music taste aside, I do not blame an artist to not want to play something they wrote in their teens way in their 50s. I've found stuff I love in their catalog throughout their 30+ year career and stuff I can do
Without but props to them for continuing to grind and do whatever they want. Ultimately, if they go to sleep at night knowing they're writing music they love, then their mission is accomplished.
I'll change my mind when one of them judges American idol...

hmm, I like it a lot. Doesn't really sound like them other than Anthony's talky rap/singing and the slap line...and they shouldn't sound like "old" Peppers at this point. I think it's great.

I think that's what Joe and Harry meant. It's a nice tune with great production. It just has no...edge. It has that...clapping.
The clapping is a big part of my issue too. Hopefully this was just an ill-advised effort to make the lead single more radio friendly- the album cut could be different. I've had issues with their single choices in the past (Rain Dance Maggie, anyone?) so maybe this is another case of them saving the best for later. I'm reserving my judgement for June 17th, hoping for a little more energy and a whole lot more Chad.
They got a nice funky pop thing going on that song, it's not bad, it's just a bit generic and haven't much to do with Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Sounds like a modern pop tune. If thats the sound they were aiming for then kudos. IMO their best producer was always heroin.
More so when the burnouts burn out. Drugs/booze, poverty and angst are common primary ingredients in most of history's great rock... and funk ... soul. ... jazz .... probably classical...etc. Remove all three, and ... well let's just be glad they're alive.
Clapping's too loud for me in this tune. "Meh" on first pass. I got on board with RHCP briefly around Mother's Milk. Too much filler/jokey vs. killer for me. I preferred much heavier stuff for both rock and funk, or for funk-rock.
Didn't really listen to them again until last week. I've covered some of their tunes and heard them in clubs or on the radio, even really dug the singles with "Californi" within the title, but it never once entered my mind to check out an album or show.
However last week I happened across a video of their recent performance at the New Orleans Jazz Fest and I quite dug it, especially the latest tunes. Loved the new guitarist's tones, taste, playing and solos. Frusciante was obviously awesome and a key man in the writing, even I'm aware of that as a non-follower, but I think many are missing out on the new guy. He's fantastic.
His playing led me to check out this live show in which they perform the last album in its entirety. Loved it.
And this thread lead me to this track, apparently a B-side from that album, that I'm totally diggin' too. Killer grooves. Could've been the best track on the album!
My respect to a band that does what they want to and can actually jam! In some ways they're more genuinely punk now than ever, so long as they're being true to themselves.

I've been away from the RHCP since I watched them live for the 3rd. time. All 3 times Anthony Kiedis sucked so much it made me think he's mostly tonedeaf (the more he tries to sing instead of rap the more painful it is to hear). Also Frusciante was so inconsistent, sounded like Guitar Hero screwups all 3 times. I admire how the other half of the band's awesomeness compensates for their so evident lacks (and no, I don't get the Frusciante thing, maybe it's blurred by his signature sloppiness). I can't imagine being in a band with a singer that just can't sing in tune nor with a guitarist with 1 inspired gig out of 100 (me having watched 3 gigs, well, I was statistically doomed). Like it or not, best most consistent live material from the RHCP was back in the mid '90s with Dave Navarro. Still I like some studio material from all their further LPs. Just can't forgive their negligence towards half the band's terrible live performance.
