New Rickenbacker Colors

Asking because I don't know: has RIC ever done a 4001/3 OEM in a dark, manly purple? Or is midnight blue / azure as close ad they've come to it?

I'd really dig that new burst with the checker binding and the 60's style knobs if it didn't have that black hardware/fretboard. Those touches look awful IMO.

This isn't random bitching about a retro-style component. I actually like the look of the original-style bridge; it is one of several defining features of a Ric. I still own and play the early '70s 4001 I mentioned in my original post. I'm wondering why Ric doesn't bother to make a bridge that looks like the one that came on my 4001 but actually functions properly. It can be done, but hasn't. The question is: why?

If it were easy to replicate the look of the bridge with better functionality, I have to think some third party hardware manufacturer would have done it by now (Hipshot's bridge misses the mark; it's different enough to look weird, IMO)

Anybody who comes closer in look with a functional bridge will get sued by Ric, they tried that with Hipshot and lost.

I don't like either of them. If I had to pick one, it would be the burst but I think it would look better if it had a solid white binding instead of what looks like a dotted line.

I don't mean to hijack the thread any, but I'm ignorant as to why this bridge doesn't function properly. What's the deal?

That pink is sweet. I could never own a Ric because I hate the way they feel but aesthetically I've always thought they looked badass.

Way back in the day I had a 4001. I loved the tone, and the thin neck, but it was soooo heavy, and extremely headstock heavy. I actually had a callous at the base of my left index finger from holding it up. Even heavier after putting lead in the cavities in an attempt to balance it. Finally had to let it go, went with a nice light S. D. Curlee, double octave fret board, great tone.

The bridge functions fine, its just a PITA to adjust intonation, and has no individual saddle height adjustments. When you take the strings off, the saddle piece just falls out. In practice you set and forget, so not a big issue either way. Its a cool looking retro hood ornament that Ric will never upgrade, and will sue to prevent others from doing so. The Hipshot is a functional improvement, looks similar,.and covers the existing bridge cavity. Opinions vary on how it looks.

Man, I REALLY want that burst. How much time usually lapses between them showing a prototype and it being available for purchase? Given they put it into production at all...

I like the pink one better. But it's a simpler customization. Love a pink bass.

I really like the purfling (?) binding on the sunburst, but somehow the triangle inlays don't work for me with that. I think they should have done dot inlay, or no fretboard inlay, on that model. The binding is reminiscent of classical guitar which also has (usually) no dots/blocks.

There's the 75th anniversary DCM (dark cherry metallic) bass. It's got a purple-ish vibe, but is more maroon depending on where you draw the line between colours.

Looks like the pink is a special run for Chicago Music Exchange.
The burst is a prototype.

Neither does the Alembic bridge, but I have never heard anyone complain about that.

If I remember correctly, you convert 4-string Rics to 5, yes? And if so, do you find yourself having to use 5-string bridges with narrower string spacing than, say, a bridge spaced for Fenders?

Yes that is me ... look to the left at my commercial user statement ... and look below at my web site link ...

The 4003 will be 2 5/16" at the bridge, the 4004 basses before 2006 2 1/2" at the bridge, new 4004 basses 2 3/8". There are 2 factors to deal with ... the neck width and the pickup width

I also convert Fender and Gibson style basses into 5 strings they will usually be 2 1/2" at the bridge.
