I prefer buying used, but if the fender's quality and the squier's quality are even, take the squier.

New Squier? Or used Fender?

I returned my Squier Classic Vibe 60s Jazz to Guitar Center for a full refund after keeping it only about a week. The damn thing was perfect, but I am really a Precision Bass guy. The tones I like and the feel I like just aren't in a Jazz.
I bought my 2006 MIA P-bass with the HSC off Ebay for exactly $600. It takes patience to find them, but they are out there.

Good luck finding a MIA Fender for $600, but 30 year old Squiers routinely go for over $300 on the 'bay and here in the classifieds.
Seriously, I've got two Squiers that are every bit as good in every detail you list as any MIA Fender. ("Better wood"? What exactly is that anyway?!) But you're right, no case
Well I happen to think MY wood is better than Squier wood....for what it's worth...
If I were you I'd choose the Squier. It's cheaper and you don't care about brand names.

There are no 30 year old Squiers. 29 year old Squiers are MIJ. No comparison with the present product.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. My point was that a decent Squier holds its value fairly well. The old MIJ and MIA Squiers are illustrative. Check this beauty in classifieds now:

With the reputation of current CV and VM models, there's no reason to believe they won't hold their value decently aside from their being in such easy supply. Mid-nineties Squier Pro-tone, and a few other unusual models bring excellent resale too.

What I mean is, there's no comparison between a US/Japan product made in the 1980s and a MIC/MII/MIM product made today. Wasn't that clear?

When you say you can get a new Squier for $200 or a used Fender for $500 you are describing a New Squier Affinity or a "good deal" on a used MIA Fender. It's not fair to comare a $200 bass with a $1,200 bass. Now if your talking about a new Classic Vibe Squier against a used MIM Fender, then that is a different comparasion. I might go for the Squier. Yet, I don't like to buy new, I let someone else take the 40% depreciation.

1) A number of guys on here were buying brand new MIA Fender Highway Ones recently for approximately $440.
2) There's a MIA Fender Jazz on Daddys.com right now for $599.99. It's a refin with EMGs, but who cares? It should still sound good and play well. And the pickups are easy enough to change to back genuine Fender later, if you don't like the EMGs.

...and I just bought an '87 Fender Jazz Special for $150 with HSC. You can get good buys if you're patient.
But when is the question.
Three years ago, an MIA for $600 wouldn't have impressed me.
Today? It's hard to find an MIJ for less than $550.

EDIT: In case you didn't know, a Jazz Special is MIJ.
All the prices I mentioned were current or in the last couple of months. Brand new Highway Ones for $442 or so was very recent.

I wish I liked common instruments. I only shop for the oddballs so I'm usually happy about paying $550 for an MIJ.
I like MIJ instruments. Other than the electronics, which I always replace, they're just as good as MIA instruments. I'm rarely satisfied with stock electronics, so it's a good place to skimp.
