Yes, she's not the greatest, yet. But I think the hype has more to do with her being so young and already so good (rather than just her being a female). I wonder how phenomenal she would be in 2-3 years. I am amazed at her potential. In baseball terms, she's like a bluechip prospect who batted .303 25HR 100 RBI in her first year of major league service, with absolute certainty of getting better.

If it's a dude this young and already this good, he'd get the same hype she does.

About the presenter... he annoyed me with his "air guitar hands" while he was dicussing things bass. Did that bother anyone else?

And to the person who moticed that she rarely plays in 1st position... great observation. I play in first lots, but I'm a bigger woman than she is. When learning to put my hands in proper position, though, I did a lot of my practice training at the 7th fret so I could get some basics down before working the wider stretches I'd need for 1st position.

To the one who said for her to use her left pinkie: I noticed that too! :D Funny stuff!

Thanks to the OP for posting this. I've been wanting to see this clip for awhile but the Today show link has never worked for me. Glad to see it up on you tube now :) You can see how much she just LOVES playing bass...awesome. Tal's a natural bass player. It's in her DNA! I can't wait to see her keep growing and see what she does next. :bassist:

I met Tal in May when she played in LA with Wayne Krantz and I didn't sense any attitude at all. She was totally cool with me and very gracious. She even took a picture with me and drew a happy face on my CD :D

I am the same size as Tal and I tend to play mostly in the first position. Over the years I've had to make a conscious effort to use more of the fretboard. I actually find it way more difficult to play in the upper frets the way she does. Go figure. A lot of jazz bass playing is in the higher registers. I would guess she plays up there alot because it suits her musical style and genre and not so much her arm size lol JUST SAYIN' ;)

What "smooth jazz" radio station were you listening to in the 80s that had bassists that sounded like that? I would have understood if you would have said fusion but smooth jazz?????????? Tal's musical voice is nowhere near the smooth jazz or what I like to call contemporary music range.

great clip, but oh dear, that Richard Wilkins -- what an embarrassment. He's like the world's ultimate hack. Such a moron. Absolute little media whore IM[not-so]HO. He's peeved me off ever since the 80s when he was hosting MTV AU. Why the heck should bass be an unusual instrument for a young girl to take up. Go back to being a film critic, Dick, something else you can't do. Or go back to that lame hairband you were in, what were they called, Wilde And Reckless for chrissake.

Urgh.

That moron brings out the worst in me.

Watch, Destiny's Child/Pop star-who ever is gonna offer her a butt load of cash to go on tour and she'll drop all the cool gigs in a heart beat!!!
Sorta like Jennifer Batten with Michael Jackson.

Good to revisit her stuff. I totally dig her - when I close my eyes I definitely don't hear a young...woman or man...playing. I hear a badass who grooves hard, understands dynamics and vibrato, has serious solo chops, and who knows how to play with cats like Vinnie without being intimidated or overplaying to try to keep up. She's totally aces in my book.

Her voice is deeper than I expected...I'd forgotten about that.
