New Tech 21 VT Bass 300 Head!

I dig it. I can see myself getting one of these.

I have owned, gigged, and recorded with a Tech 21 LM300 paired with a Tech 21 B410 cab for 4 years now and love it. Never played a VT bass but have had a BDDI and own a Tech21 Bass Power Wedge.

Great for recording, rehearsals and live gigs. Tech 21 products are reliable, built tough and sound great. Customer service is the best I have expierienced.

The amps weight isnt too bad either when put in a rack case. I bet it will be in the area of about $750.

of course it is. and then they complain that they blew their cabs.

Yeah I think people have gotten stuck on this idea that they can squeeze even more watts out at 2 ohms, even though most of the time it wouldn't make a perceptible difference, and often as not they are comparing 300W amps with 500W amps and so forth.

I agree with the suggestion earlier that this size/weight/wattage was just so they could keep their initial costs way down by making use of their existing head platform. A normal and practical manufacturing decision.

However I hope, if this head doesn't sell like hotcakes, that they don't decide the "VT head" concept is a no-go! Because as everyone here is stating, what the consumer really wants is a VT micro head. Tech21 just has to decide whether they can afford to tool up their own micro head to support this idea. It really might come down to their initial costs being too high.

Maybe they could tag-team with MB or GB?

I've never tried the VT pedal, but, if you did'nt care for the Vt, you would'nt buy it, right, ? Seems like you would be selling to a small market.

The thing is, the VT is one of the best Ampeg emulators on the market. So the target market is "all Ampeg players who want SVT tone in a small package". But you're right, if somebody didn't like the VT then they shouldn't buy this head.

Of course it isn't. I like to be able to run two 4 ohm cabs. In my case these are two 212 cabs. It has nothing to do with trying to get the "most watts at 2 ohms" out of a head. I'm not sure how micro amps even apply to what I said, considering this is a normal sized rack mount amp.

Missing: long overdue BLEND knob, Speakon outs, and dedicated front-panel MUTE button

Wish List: lighter + more powerful Class D amp section, smaller chassis

If only they did a TalkBass "focus group" first :-)

300 watts might not seem a lot, but the VT Bass pedal makes my Markbass LMII sound a lot more powerful than it actually is... I don't know how it does it but it does. I *think* it's because it attenuates power-hungry sub-low frequencies and substitutes harmonics that make it sound to the ear like it has massive lows. But that's just my theory.

I really wish it had a Speakon output jack like the LMII. If it did, I would be seriously considering getting one and relegating my LMII to backup duty. My VT Bass pedal is an always-on thing for me. The gain switch on this amp would come in very handy when switching back and forth between my active Yamaha bass and my passive basses, and the channel-switching feature would be great for switching between mild overdrive and a boosted tone for parts of certain songs... I know the VT Bass Deluxe pedal can do that, but it would be nice to have all of this built in to an amp head and not have to worry about a pedal.

I'm with ya!

I think Talkbass speaks for the general bass playing public even when the public doesn't know what they want. Make sense? We think about all the details, hash them out, and thus we would make the perfect focus group for many companies, IMO.
