New to playing, SR800, I have some questions.

I love The SR series basses. I own an SR206 and an SR506 both purchased used in the $200 range. And here you are a newbie and with your first bass you are dealing like a pro!
There are so many aspects of bass playing, from the music to the basses to the showbiz and so much more and I assure you you will find a great bunch of players here in Talkbass that have a sum total knowledge of bass that can answer all questions and blow you away with their expertise. Don't be afraid to ask "stupid questions" because as the saying goes there are NO stupid questions. Welcome aboard!

I know he's got a goofy image, what many people feel is a weird and un-musical bass sound, and there are way better players out there BUT, when Korn hit the scene there was really nothing that sounded like that. I liked the first album cause it was heavy and totally different than the Anthrax, Metallica, and other metal bands I was into at the time. Not that I spend much time listening to them now, and I really wasn't into Korn albums after the self-titled debut, but I gotta give credit where credit is due.
I agree - Korn wrote the book on Nu Metal with a unique super heavy sound by use of 7-string guitars/bass down-tuned a full step, not to mention their one of a kind stage presence.
Personally I like all the bands you mentioned, but you forgot Megadeth.
You got a great deal on a very good bass. The SR800 was once one of the highest quality basses Ibanez made. AFR pickups are Active Full Range meaning the pickups are active with active preamp/EQ circuitry whereas a lot of "active" basses are passive pickups with active preamp/EQ . Good job on getting a great deal, enjoy it.
I don't think it has been modified, but I haven't opened her up to look yet.
That's amazing you have an s14, and a kouki no less!! That's what I want really bad, currently I have a 91 s13 hatch with an rb25det in it and then I just picked up a 93 s13 coupe shell.

I know ALOT of people don't like Fieldy but I love his style. I grew up listening to KoRn, System Of A Down, SlipKnot, Mudvayne, Static-X, TooL, and tons and TONS more. I grew up with a HUGE music presence so there is much that I love listening to and eventually want to start playing. I also enjoy punk rock like Bad Religion and many others, I hope to excel in these styles.
I took some pictures of it but it won't let me upload them from my phone for some reason so once I figure that out I will post some fore sure.

Well at first I thought it was a 94 due to the color, but my wife says that it isn't Royal blue lol.
The serial number is F147854 made in Japan. Everything I have read so far leads me to believe this is authentic, which is good. And also from reading it appears to be a 91. I'm going to assume the pups have been upgraded because these are the white logo AFR P/J's and I guess the earlier years had a red logo and different lettering.
I haven't looked for it in the catalog yet, I looked at the 94 tho. I'm trying to upload more pictures but it keeps saying "not enough memory"

As others mention you got a fantastic deal. You've also got one of the most comfortable to play basses so an awesome choice for a beginner. The Fieldy sound is "scooped", in other words boosted bass and treble with less mid range. Do you have an amp yet? For the Korn bass sound I'd crank the bass and treble controls on the bass and maybe lower the mids on the amp (depending on how it sounds).

Edit: it's worthy mentioning that Fieldy plays a 5 string so you can approximate his tone but without the low B string you can't play same lowest notes
I did notice that on his videos, I thought about getting a 5 string. I looked at his signature Ibanez K-5. After thinking about it for a few days I decided that for now I will start on a 4 string, a really good one by the sound of it, and after I get better and more familiar with everything get a 5 string. I would like to add an Ibanez K-5 to my collection as well as a WarWick Double Buck-5, preferably a German made WarWick.
47854 means it was made very late in the year. It was made in 91 but for the 92 model year. Like cars. My 89 240sx was actually made in 88.
The color is jewel blue. I know it looks purple but that is the flash. The pickups, bridge and knobs are correct for a 1992 model.

As hypercarrots mentioned above, it was made late 1991. So that's probably the reason why you have the new AFR pick ups installed on it instead of the Lo-Z. I had a 1992 SR800 which I think was the first year you started seeing the ones with the stacked knobs.
These are the available colors according to the blue book valuation for the later models of the SR800 (1991-2003) (not sure if this info is 100% accurate but take it for what it is and according to this, Jewel blue was a color for your bass that year.
available in Atlantic Blue (1998 only), Black (1991-99), Candy Apple (1992 only), Cayman Green (1994 only), Cherry Fudge (1998-99), Dark Metallic Green, Emerald Green (1993 only), Grape Ice (1991 only), Gray Nickel (1999-2003), Jade Metallic (1995-97), Jewel Blue (1991-93), Metallic Blue (1995, 1997-98), Royal Blue (1994 only), Ruby Red (1991 only) finishes, mfg. 1991-2003.

Vari-Mid 3-Band (2 rubber knobs, 2 plastic stacked knobs) from 1993-2003 (knobs were metal in 2005)

I play a red SR895 that i purchased in March of 93 and its been my main bass since then. I changed the pickups and electronics to EMG's in 94 before I was aware of Bartolini or any other brand of pickups and electronics. One of the best basses I ever owned. Wouldn't trade or sell it for the world.

I like the jewel blue more after looking at the difference. I will check out that link so I can read about the changes over the years.
I'm glad I got this figured out. For not knowing anything about what I was buying I definitely picked up a fantastic instrument. The next step is new strings and an app. I can't wait to start putting hours into this.
A fortuitous purchase for sure - the bass gods were looking out for you.
Another thing about the SR800, it's got a graphite reinforced neck so it's very stable unlike a lot of thin neck basses.
