New: Zoom B3n Multi-Effects

Yeah, that was a happy accident. I know that old school bassists used those HiWatt rigs, but it surprised me easily that amp model went into overdrive, and how mid-heavy it was. It's got a nice fat grind to it. That's my go-to patch when I use the G5n on its own. The mid control on my bass cleans up a lot of the grime when I roll it back. In the end, for rock gigs, I like the SVT model in the B3 as my first choice. I've always been able to get the sound I'm after with it (as in the Soundcloud Divaricator clip). It is noticeable, though, how much the G5n amp tones seem to just breathe more, sound and feel more "open" compared to the B3 models. I'm hoping that the B3n amp/cab models offer the same refinements to the bass realm. I'm stoked to see exactly what they've got cooking for comps, drives, and other fx.
That looks like overkill x500000000 but if it works for you, that's awesome!

I was trying to look into Chapman Sticks purely out of interest and can't find any info on where to buy one, or price ranges, anywhere! Are they good for metal? I don't want one per se, another instrument, more costs, more learning etc, when I still suck at guitar and bass :p But I'm curious!

Guys, Zoom has just posted updates on B3n patches:

A number of modern bands have taken their cues from icons like Lemmy (Motorhead), Chris Squire (Yes), Geddy Lee (Rush), John Wetton (King Crimson), Dug Pinnick from Kings X, and a number of others who weren't necessarily afraid to lay down the heavy bass with some distortion.

Or play through cabs with ripped speaker cones a la Geezer on the first Black Sabbath album....

I really appreciate how easy it is to download the new effects and patches, and I LOVE that Zoom is taking care of we Bassists. Between the MS60B update and the new FX for the N, I am a happy camper. I really like the MBmini. It is everything I liked about the MB heads in one slot. It has made its way into every patch, for different reasons. Very versatile. THANK YOU ZOOM!

Ok I got a b3n today?
A how do I bypass it?
B I think my status is too powerful??

There are clear instructions to use the Tuner/Bypass mode in the owner's manual. Press+Hold the Memory/Stomp button, and you can have it mute, or "bypass" which passes thru a dry signal. Pg. 28.

What do you mean when you say you think your "status is too powerful"? I'm assuming you have a Status bass. Are you saying that the output is too strong for the B3n input?

Yes, its distorts the sound when I put it in by pass from the tuner?? Maybe just turn the out put down?

I played around with some of the presets this morning. The "tapin
Speaking of utilizing a Zoom guitar pedal for your bass tones, I experimented the opposite way last night and I was pleasantly surprised to hear how well the B3N worked with a strat and a Princeton Reverb amp.... sounded great actually, gave the strat a lot of warmth.

I had room on my "guitar" pedal board and so I figured I slip the B3N in and give it a shot and the results were great.

Ok, enough of that ..... :)
Hmmm ... I wonder what would happen if I tried that with my new 8 string guitar ....

Hey Jimfist
Did you have the oportunity to test the expression pedal situation? I mean, the status of the pedal when selected with a footswitch

Thanks!

Apologies, but I've not had the chance. A lot of travel and other things going on this week. No promises, but I will make an attempt tonight to see how the wah settings behave, if they remember the location as programmed, or if they follow the existing position of the pedal when changing to a patch with a PEDAL effect engaged.

Hi
I searched for this but didn't find an answer. If anybody can shed a light on these subjects I would greatly appreciate it

1- Is there a way to inmediatly bypass the effect with just one footswitch? I think maybe in Memory (patch) mode if I press the switch for the already active patch it will go into bypass. The purpose for this is to have my non affected tone always available while beign able to egage a patch now and then.
2- When using an expression pedal, if I go to a patch that uses that pedal, will the sound change inmediatly and correspond to whatever position the pedal is at that moment? I mean, if I go to a patch that uses the Ex pedal for volume and the pedal is at its heel position, will the sound be muted when i select the patch? Or if change to a patch with wah and the pedal is at the toe position, will the sound be inmediatly super bright?

Thanks a lot

At least with the B3 the answer to your 2nd question is clearly a no (and I believe also for the B3n). The reason lies AFAIK in the passive electronics of the expression pedal. They are very simple (see my earlier conteibutions) and it seems without some movement of the pedal, the device, i.e. the B3 or B3n, cannot learn the pedal's position. As a consequence I do generally move my expression pedal, even if this means returning to the very same position (e.g. heel), after patch switches to ensure the new patch is well defined. Otherwise you risk to play initially the patch with an unintended expressin pedal value, e.g. the wrong volume.
The B3 has the philosophy to maintain the control value of the pedal, e.g. the volume, from the previous patch when coming to a new patch. In some way this is nice, since it support a smooth patch switch without - or at least a minmum of -disturbing switch noises. However it can rsult in a setting that does not belong to the new patch at all, e.g. a volume level outside of the range the new patch defines. The overall effct can be quite odd, which I learned the hard way during gigs.

One of my uncles was a bass player on the blues scene in the 1960s, and around 1964ish (he recently died so I can't get the exact date now) he got a fuzz pedal for his bass. He may not have been the first, but certainly early, which shows the pedals may have been used at least some of the time.

Sure, but bass rarely used effects. Most of the tones you are referring to came from the amps. BTW, I was already playing in those times and was part of the 60's scene (and not dead yet).

Hey guys, back in this thread again. Went on vacation and got busy with life and such. I said I'd post a pic of my completed pedalboard with the B3n on it, here you go.

Pedalboard.jpg

This is my first attempt at a full pedalboard that allows me to use my Chapman Stick and guitar at the same time. I swap the Stick melody signal and guitar signals with the switch on the right, which go into the G3xn. The buffer/splitter box is a bass/guitar/melody signal summer with a third output into my Polytune. THe HOF reverb provides extra "whole board" reverb, mostly used for the Beat Buddy just to add a little extra space to the drum beats.

If I had a bigger practice space, I'd offload the mixer onto a desk or something. But for now, I'm stuck in a little room. Furthermore, utilizing a Stick on its own typically requires some extra facilities in terms of signal routing in order to properly utilize effects for either side. A mixer tends to be the best and most efficient way to do it.

Both signals (minus the Beat Buddy) go into the looper, so I can lay down a Stick backing track, then play guitar over top of it, complete with a beat.

My lame little attempt at being a one man band. :)

Your board looks intriguing. I also play with two instruments (bass, e-cello) and I am therefore very much interested in your setup. Could you explain a bit more how the actual signal flow goes, please? Thanks!
