New: Zoom B3n Multi-Effects

A recent reply by Zoom to a person upset that the B3n was not in fact a B5n contained verbiage that bass product sales do not support the existence of a B5n equivalent to the G5n.

Regardless, Zoom would never answer your above question directly as they recently stated they like keeping secrets from us!

One of the things I like on the G5n is the dedicated tuner button. The 3 size just doesn't allow for it.

Since this thread is the one getting all the attention right now, I'll post this G5n information here rather than the other "B5n" thread that was started a while ago. This is a window into what can be expected from B3n users based on what's going on with the my experiences with the G5n, since all of the new ZOOM units share the same computer software/librarian (Guitar Lab).

First, here's a link to pdf for all of the updates/additions for the G5n since inception:

Next are screenshots I just took upon hooking up the G5n to Guitar Lab, showing primarily the "Used Memory Ratio" at 52%. This means that there's plenty of room for new amps and cabinets.

Evidently, there must have been some sort of update to some, but not all, effects that I had previously loaded onto the G5n, but were showing up (again) as "NEW" items. After loading those onto the G5n (lots of them were delays and reverbs) - about a dozen or so in all - the "Used Memory Ratio" increased to 56%. That's not bad considering the nature of the delay and reverbs (the HD Hall) which are notorious memory hogs, along with the amp and some drive stomp models. I chose NOT TO load the "BOMBER" effect onto the G5n.

Next is a screenshot showing that the B3n is now a device supported by Guitar Lab. What is interesting is that ZOOM has appeared to have made all a number of effects available for download across all platforms, but not everything - most importantly, NOT THE AMPS AND CABS. The G5n/G3n share their amps and cabs, while the B3n shows them as blacked-out (when connected to the G5n), seemingly to indicate that these cannot be shared with the G5n/G3n. I've highlighted the B5n, and the selected SVT amp model, showing how it is blacked out, and at the bottom the "Load To Device" is grayed-out so you can't download it (to the G5n).

[edit: you can in fact "unload" items from your device by clicking on the EFFECTS icon, selecting the effect you want to remove from the list, right clicking, and removing that item.] Note that there is a "Load to device" button, but there isn't a "Offload FROM device" option, meaning that (at the moment) you can't remove an effect from the device once it is uploaded. If you see an effect or amp/cab that you clearly will never want to use, NOT loading it to the device will save you memory. I'm also guessing that when ZOOM does an internal update/bug fix to one of their pre-existing effects/models, it will re-appear as a *NEW* item, as is the case with the BOMBER effect mentioned above.

So, @CharlieC , this should answer your question about whether you can intermix G5n/G3n features with the B3n: NO for amps/cabs. YES for some effects; NO for any effect (compressor, for example) that was created specifically for the B3n (bass specific effects). Thus, ZOOM *could have* made everything available across all platforms, but they chose to be selective about these items. This is not completely unexpected IMO, as cross-platform availability of all items would be too good to be true.

Excellent post, @jimfist !

I am in agreement that even more excellent would have been the ability to cross platform.

Who knows? Perhaps someone is up to cracking this software-imposed limitation in the future... Hmmmm... ;)

Doubtful. We're talking about proprietary modeling code, not buried MIDI spec or controller spec, and it's probably quite illegal. Nor would the effort be warranted considering the dollar value of these items.

Though there might be technical reasons some might not want to do this, the real-world answer is to simply buy a G3n for $150, and run it in line with a B3n for $200. Not a bad rig for $350, with 6 discrete on/off switches (still don't like the way the tuner switching works, but oh well). Though not a sexy solution, it is safe, legal, practical, and it would work fine. In fact, that's probably what I'll be doing with my G5n providing most effects (via the loop insert of my Divaricator) running into the B3n providing amp/cab sims, and finishing touch compression/enhancement/EQ, etc. I'll also need my G5n for use as a USB audio I/O once the B3 is replaced by the B3n.

Not illegal... It's like jailbreaking an iPhone. Probably not easy but not impossible. Zoom might brick or refuse to update modded devices though so I wouldn't bother :)

I wonder if zoom will eventually release bass models for the the G5N, just as they did with the MS100BT bluetooth multistomp. This one became the ideal MS pedal for guitarists who doubled on bass (or vice versa). The G5n could be a perfect platform for a larger version of this idea.

As evidenced when comparing both of Zoom's web sites (yes, there are two independent sites) that the MS-100BT is no longer available outside of Japan.

My belief is that a new Multi-Stomp will release in the next 6 months that will be based on the new DSP powering the latest Multi-Effects and be able to leverage the new Guitar Lab download portal. With this said, that perhaps will be the vehicle for containing both guitar and bass models.

At this time there are no signs indicating that bass and guitar models will be able to co-exist on any other current device. This is a deliberate move on Zoom's part.

Cheers!

Just got my first bass the other day, so I was looking for a multieffects/ amp sim unit for it. Really happy this was announced, but it looks like it'll only come with 5 amps, whereas the B3 has 12 different amp models. Your thoughts?

The amp models in the B3n are a complete step-up over those in the B3 hardware, which is now 5-year old technology. Zoom has stated that the amp/cab models in the B3n are the best they have ever produced.

Even though only 5 amp models are included with the B3n, Zoom specifically mentioned at NAMM 2017 this weekend that they will increase this number at the rate of 1 amp model per month via their Guitar Lab download portal. The B3 is fixed at 12 amp models.

There's a good likelihood that Zoom will continue to add new amps and effects for the B3n, just as they have done with the G5n since its inception. It would be good to think that these updates would come frequently, gut given that the general realm of bass amp models and effects are somewhat limited compared to guitar amps and effects, I'm expecting to see only a few key additions to the amps/cabs in the near future (next 6 months or so)...all based purely on speculation and nothing else.

Even so, the amps that are offered are a very worthy selection, and chances are you'll be able to find a suitable model with a little trial and error. The "quality over quantity" aspect is what is being focused on by Zoom with the new pedals. If you're more concerned with the number of sounds available, you may want to punt for the time being and get your feet wet with an B3, MS60B or B1xon or something like that. There's nothing at all wrong with any of those units. The sounds are perfectly good. It's just that the new models may sound subjectively "better", but that's a preference thing.

Thanks guys. Good to hear that ZOOM will be adding more amps to the selection, as I'm hoping to get a good amp sim unit than a multieffects per se.

If we're just talking amp sims, should I still wait for the B3n, or do I want to look at the BOSS units? I definitely can't afford a Kemper atm, and as far as I know Line 6 doesn't really do bass stuff anymore, so it's just down to Zoom and BOSS now?

Or line 6 hd500x or helix
Or a fractal unit
Or an atomic amplifire
