New: Zoom B3n Multi-Effects

Hi

I think I would go with the factory recommended spec - ie 500ma.

It comes with a wall wart and it needs an isolated supply - if you buy a multi supply brick be sure to get a good one with isolated channels. Most of these will have a couple of 500ma output jacks.
This.

Mixing digital pedals with analog ones is always a crapshoot, and you often don't find out you've got a potential problem until you're in a room with iffy AC power.

There are a ton of posts on this thread (and others), with people unsuccessfully trying to troubleshoot come-and-go digital zipper noise, etc.

Save yourself the headache- either use the recommended Zoom wall wart, or at least get a good, brand-name power supply with a.) isolated outputs, and b.) at least Zoom's rated minimum current requirement.

The HX Stomp checks a lot of boxes for a small format amp/cab/fx modeler. It is on the pricier side of things at $599US. The one thing it is missing that bassists especially like to see (and we've heard the gripes from plenty of people regarding Zoom) is an XLR output. Perhaps Zoom could be forgiven for the omission since they are in the "budget" market. Gotta admit, though, the HX Stomp has a lot of great features for bassists. I may pull the trigger if I can create the $$$.

I have an OmniCabSim Mini on the way to give me a DI solution. I like the cab sims in the HXS, but I found that through my Yamaha DSR112, I liked my tone with the pre amp only versions of the amp sims the best! I want to be able to EQ to each situation on the fly, and this will solve for the lack of a DI as well. Probably should have just gotten the HX Floor!

While there is no balanced XLR connector there is a balanced TRS connector. A TRS to XLR adapter isn't exactly expensive or hard to find.

of course, and lack of built in DI wouldn't bother me. i'm just pointing out that anyone who was displeased with Zoom or Boss for their lack of an XLR output should be equally displeased with Line 6 for the same omission on a pedal that is more than double the cost.

FYI, I've just read that ATOMIC AMPS Amplifire will be including an SVT bass amp model in an upcoming firmware release. I've been begging for this from them for a long time. Though the on-unit programming isn't as slick as other units (it does have a computer editor), the Amplifire line of products DOES have XLR outputs in addition to an FX loop insert (not on the Ampli-fire Box, though). The 6 button version Amplifire looks great at $499US, and the Fire-Box at $299 US is great for limited tasks, though it does have a great feature set via the USB computer editor.

things are getting better for bassists. Still waiting for the Hotone Ampero to come around.

Are you referring to the left (headphone) output on the B3n?

Because that isn’t balanced. It’s just the right and left headphone outputs on the top and ring. Sticking a TRS to XLR adapter cable in that jack is not the same as having a real DI box or dedicated DI output.

If you just want something to take a fairly beefy signal and balance it there are plenty of cheap DI boxes that will do the job too IMHO. It's when you want a high input impedance to cope with a relatively low passive bass signal and add in some extra sauce (warming up the signal) it might be worth spending a chunk on a DI, but I've never noticed any particular degradation running a low impedance signal through a DI compared to the direct value over short cable runs, e.g. a synth 6 feet direct to a mixer versus 3 feet to a DI, then three feet balanced to the same mixer.

In some ways no xlr could be an advantage as the sound man/woman can satisfy their emotional need to use their DI. :)

Looks like a lot of key people have headed over to Helix-land (don’t blame them- might make the shift myself soon)

But I’m still loving the b3n for its effects!

This is my practise setup for a New Years festival I’m playing
