News on Chunk Systems Bass Synth

If you put the firmware update on the card properly it should ask you during boot if you want to update the OS. Is the card formatted FAT32? Is it 4GB or less? Is it SD or MMC? Make sure you copy the file to the root directory of the card and it is the .OSF file.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there some way I can force it to update the firmware? Because it's recognizing the card but not updating anything (and it's definitely a prior firmware version)...

Hi mate,

Just to make things clear. I didn't mess with any presets. When I first got it I accidentally wiped them all and then had Richard Cartwright send me the file again, which I reloaded. So it's exactly the same as stock.

PM me if you have any worries.

Also, it's very clear in the manual how to load firmware. I had no trouble doing it.

I didn't want to bother you about it before trying to figure it out, I don't blame you for this in any way. It's not updating the firmware, so the presets issue is incidental.

It came fast, thanks - feedback coming!

It's an MMC card now that I look at it, that could be the problem...

edit: using an SD card now, I was prompted to update and it appears to be working.

You want it too high or the tracking system will be overdriven at the start of the note and the tracking with be glitchy as the note starts. You could consider turning up the tracking gain if the tracking goes off as the note dies away.

Okay so I tried your suggestion of lowering the "track sens" to 0db and had no luck. Do I need to save the change immediately after I adjust it? Or does it immedietely kick in?

Basically what is happening is when I play through the synth effects I have to dig into the strings really hard to get some of them to work. And when they do kick in,the sustain of the effect dies almost immediately. Or Ill hit a note and let it ring out and the effect will kick in breifly after a few seconds and cut out very shortly afterwards. Ive had no problems with the fuzz, octave and envelope presets just the fancier synth ones, in specific harry highpants, destroy them robots and no dana only zuul. Help me please! :confused:

It does take some getting used to. How high is your action? Also, try switching to just bridge or just neck pickup - many of the sounds work MUCH better with the pickup mix to one side or the other - as with most bass synth effects.

RCCollins was nice enough to demo his OS for me tonight. Definitely cool stuff including what sounds like a solution to the "I want a G-Funk Dr. Dre styled synth bass."

It looked like it had tons of versatility and despite warnings that it would freeze on me, it stayed up and running without fail.

It was on the GAS list before I heard even half the patches it came stock with...

And for the record, RCCollins is a real nice guy with a good ear for quality effects.:)

I personally witnessed Unrepresented pulverizing the skeletons of three guitarists AND a drummer with his SVT-2 and one 15" speaker.

So, for the last year or so I've been on a weight-reduction plan. Not me, my rig. I'm trying to carry in and out as little gear as possible. I've got my micro amp (an LMII, shortly moving to an even smaller F1), and my Berg AE410.

I have been strongly considering reducing or eliminating my pedalboard, which is a pain in the ass to carry in, takes up floor space at a premium in many places we play, and costs me ten minutes on my load in and out by the time I set it up, run the cables, power, etc.

I can't go dry, though. There are a few things on the board I can't live without:

  • A compressor. But this is on all night long, and I can easily set that stompbox on top of my amp.
  • My Sonic Stomp. I have become addicted to this pedal. But again, it's on all night long and can live atop my amp.

That leaves an octaver (Boss OC-3), an auto-wah or envelope filter (MXR Auto-Q right now), and a synth (EHX BMS). Everything else I have is redundant, and even these three things are represented in three different pedals, the BMS among them being very large and a bit moody.

Sounds like I could keep my compressor and Sonic Stomp, and replace everything else I have with one Octavius Squeezer. Maybe run it with a 9V on gigs if it's not too power-hungry. Thoughts?

The OS and the BMS are both synths but each can do things the other can't. I'd say that the OS can do a lot more of what the BMS can do than vice versa, but not everything. I'm happy with the OS's octave capabilities but filters are a somewhat personal thing. It is really flexible/tweakable though so I think you could get what you want.

But I would NOT run it off a 9V. It eats them like a fat kid on cake.

Much closer to the OC-2 than the POG. Tracking is pretty good but certainly not amazing.

Much closer to the OC-2 than the POG. Tracking is pretty good but certainly not amazing.

I suppose there's potential for the pitch tracking to improve with software updates though...

Thing is I'm running an OC-2 and a Pulse Synth which produce lovely noises, but I was thinking if I could get similarly nice noises and better tracking in one box it would be an easy decision.

Damn these not-easy decisions!

Anyone got actual experience/comments on using this unit JUST as an envelope filter with programmable patches?

I would use the other stuff as well, of course, but to me it's worth getting just so I can have three or four different envelope filter settings and switch between them onstage.

I have a Qtron+ which I love but it's just not practical in live performance as I don't have the option of spending time onstage chasing sounds. And those "just a few seconds" are crucial at a real live gig.
