Honestly, I don't even know what any of the local stadiums and arenas are named here in Phoenix. I still refer to them by their original names from when they opened or generically after the team. BancOne Ballpark (Diamondbacks), Cardinals Stadium, America West Arena (Suns), and Glendale Arena. They've each gone through so many name changes over the years I'm sure there were some I hadn't even heard of. Too many important things to keep track of than learning new name changes every few years.

My MLS team is the Columbus Crew. They started at Crew Stadium in 1999, the first soccer-specific stadium in the US. In 2015 , Columbus-based Mapfre Insurance became the stadium sponsor. Most people, even in Ohio, had never heard of them and we all continued to call the place Crew Stadium. A few years later, the Haslams bought the team and built a new stadium that is sponsored by Lower.com, a mortgage company no one has heard of, so we all call it the New Crew Stadium and the previous stadium Old Crew Stadium.

I think these corporations are wasting their money with naming rights, but what do I know...

You know what you can see and hear. I couldn't tell you what the local stadium sponsors names are. The two we have a Seahawks Stadium and Mariners Stadium. They aren't officially those names. I couldn't tell you what they are supposed to be called.

When a company buys stadium naming rights, it's often (though not always) some firm that is riding a wave and thus newly flush with cash, and it's run by executives who proceed to get silly with their profits. For example, the Dolphins' stadium was funded solely by now-late owner Joe Robbie and thus bore his name. The naming rights were later infamously sold to Pro Player, an athleticwear business whose time had come--and then went rather quickly. But the name stayed on the stadium for years after the company was essentially done, due to the contract.

Much more recently, Crypto.com bought the arena that houses the Lakers/Clippers, etc. in December 2021. Bitcoin peaked that month and is down about 70% since then.:D

Now insurance tends to be a more stable business, so maybe these guys will hang around. Still, the whole thing is goofy.

Somebody has a job making up corporate names. Probably the same person who gets to name paint colors. My perverse sense of humor really wants that job.

Cardinals ink QB Kyler Murray to a 5 yr/$230.5M deal. Hmmph.

$46M a year for a guy that habitually disappears in the second half of the season. Then whines about being a scapegoat when the offense stinks it up. Yes, the talent is there, but the maturity hasn't quite caught up yet.
