The Steelers went from a guy who won zero playoff games the last eight years to a guy who won one playoff game in the last eight years.
That's a cryin shame Rooney went cheap and snagged some guy from yesteryear who's just happy to have a job today.

Out of ALL the possible considerations the last few weeks, it felt like McCarthy was the "ha ha funny joke" speculation but I just have no words for what was officially posted today. Maybe I'll be proven wrong but I feel that Rooney is out of his ever living mind on this one. I don't like it, I don't want it and I certainly don't get it. Maybe it's time for me to take a year off from football. The disappointment just never ends with this organization lately and I'm just exhausted and fed up with the direction they THINK they are going. 🤬😫

I took a step back a few years ago with the Steelers when it was obvious to me Rooney is a business man, and not a football man like his father, and kept trotting Tomlin out there with zero desire or interest to do anything more than win eight or nine times a year.
I don't care as much anymore, but I had the same thought as you about McCarthy. Or maybe he was just something to talk about until they get a chance to interview some of the guys still coaching right now. Welp, the joke is on Steeler fans and Rooney doesn't give two craps because fans still line up around the block to get into Heinz Field to sing Renegade and reminisce about Franco, Lambert, Stallworth, Bettis, etc.
Who knows though. Maybe @gln1955 is right and he'll develop Howard, but I think he's going to stick with Rodgers and whatever other Packers they can convince to come join them to run it back one last time together.
Anyone heard from Chmura lately?

I also stepped back a bit the last few years. 9 or 10 wins, 0-1 in the playoffs, the standard is the standard. I'm disappointed that it looks like the Steelers may be joining the coaching carrousel after having just 3 coaches in my lifetime. I'm doing my best to be optimistic.

I'll echo the stepping back from the NFL. I just don't trust the product. There is more than a whiff of WWF scripting, Sports betting shenanigans. There was a time when I rejected such allegations but the reffing is simply the worst it's ever been and it coincides nicely with the emergence of sports betting.

I've been into the All Blacks, Arsenal and am getting more and more into F1 - especially with Cadillac joining the field.

I have stepped back from pretty much all sports in the past few years. I’m not sure if it’s because of age (at some point, watching a bunch of roided out guys in superhero outfits beat the hell out of each other while flexing and posing and acting disrespectful to their opponents every time they make a play starts to seem pretty dumb), or because of the endless commercials (the older I get, the more I despise commercials), or because of sports betting and fantasy leagues (see above).

At some point, placing so much emphasis on all of the above just pales in comparison to the richness of real life. Our culture has become all about flash and hype and spectacle, and to me, it kind of ruins the actual beauty of the games. I’ll still watch the games today, but I will absolutely mute every commercial and avoid the idiotic histrionic talking head commentaries at halftime. When did Stuart Scott annd Ernie Johnston and Bob Costas and the like turn into Maria Taylor and Jason Garrett and Stephen A. Smith?* Ugh.

I still like certain players in the NFL and NBA, but they seem fewer and further between. Josh Allen, Fred Warner, Nick Chub, Matt Stafford, James Cook, Puka Nacua, a few others in the NFL. Jokic, Gordon, D. White, Giannis, and a few others in the NBA. But most of it is just fading to hypey noise to me at this point if I’m honest.

* I am pretty sure I know what the “A” stands for.

I am too. The best case is McCarthy brings in some young coordinators with modern football ideas and lets then do their thing, while developing the next QB. We'll see pretty quickly if this can happen or if it's going to be more of the same we had with Tomlin and Co.

Yes, it's sad what sports has become over the past 20 or so years. I too shut out the background noise form all of the talking heads and ofter record games, so I can watch them commercial-free in about an hour and a half.

As we've talked about in the NCAA thread, the college game is broken. It can still be regulated back to some level of sanity, but Pandora's box has been opened and can't be shut.

After the Super Bowl, I don't watch much sports since I don't follow baseball anymore (I was a huge Pirates fan in my youth) and basketball and hockey have never appealed to me much. I will catch the random EPL or MLS soccer game on TV. I had season ticket for the Columbus Crew for a few years, but got burned out on going to games.

The good news is the winter Olympics will be here soon.
