NFL Week #19 THE PLAYOFFS

The thinking is similar to youth thinking World War II was just some fighting way back in history and no longer relevant in the least, not a real war like in Iraq.

For most younger people, they grew up being fans of some player or some team with no connection in any real sense. They liked them because they won a lot, or a player had star power. It isn't as if "their" team was a part of their life in any tangible way.

I've sat and talked with Ray Nitschke on several occasions way back when. I've hung out with Brian Noble after many Packers/Bears games up here in a northwoods bar during hunting season. I'm not a player, but I've been able to gain some insight into the rivalry.

Unlike EVERY other team in the NFL, most of Wisconsin is rural and even Green Bay itself is a relatively small city. The Green Bay Packers are not just a football team among many other cultural things like in a larger city, the Green Bay Packers are the culture. The battles between the teams of the little town of Green Bay and the big city of Chicago is HISTORIC. Anyone who doesn't get that, doesn't understand football or what made the NFL what it is.

Saying Packers/Bears games aren't the biggest rivalry in the NFL is akin to saying our founding fathers weren't as important as current politicians in making the country what it is. Counting championships only post merger is juvenile and ignores what makes championships special in the first place. Greatness stands the test of time. If greatness only counts some of the time, it doesn't count for anything.

Leon Washington : 5 kick resurns for 143 yards. Avg for kick returns 28.6

To everyone that said there was no way in Hell the Jets would beat the Patriots today and to everyone that wrote them off. I only have one thing to say to all of you.

And congrats to Pete Carroll and the Seahawks. This is the exact kind of thing that a first-year coach can build on. 2 weeks ago, they were a laughingstock for making the playoffs at 7-9. A week later, they beat the SB champs -- and nobody is talking about 7-9 anymore.

Nice job and good luck! I have a feeling we'll be seeing more from this team! :)

I kept rereading the sentence wondering why you were naming a Jet as a thug then praising the Steelers. I'm still confused.

To tell the truth, I have very limited interest in most NFL games. Every year the NFL makes it more clear that it's not a sport, it's a business, they'll change the rules any way they wish whether it makes sense to the sport or not, and the players are as interchangeable and disposable as Chiclets. (See: North Dallas Forty.)

That said, I discovered the Packers in the 60's and I consider them the best of the lot. At least they're owned by a community rather than an egomaniac billionaire, so they're responsible to the people of Green Bay. I'm a Packers fan more than I am for any other franchise. I'm a Seattle fan mostly because they're my home state team, but also because their owner Paul Allen is one of the more decent people in that position.

I'm much of more a college football fan, because at least I have a direct personal connection to a certain set of universities where I earned degrees or have worked. I can really get into college sports, even though there are many hipocracies within NCAA rules.

Having said all that, I am really looking forward to the Packers/Bears game. It's the ultimate game for a Packers fan, and since Jay Cutler is such a jerk, it would be easy to root against him even if he weren't currently a Bear.

Well sir, I guess it is because I heard all week the low-class Jets "lowering the bar" in terms of trash talk and then (as they proclaimed) they did back it up; can't say I heard anything from Pittsburgh seeing as I live in New England. You see, we don't get Pittsburgh talk radio here so I could not hear the bs from them.

Even if I didn't root for NE, I would listen to Rex Ryan and his minions and hate them for their arrogance and low class drivel. Talk like that after you have won something worth while like a Super Bowl.

Steelers don't talk trash, but their hiring has been questionable this year.

I too hate the Jets talk, they couldn't beat the Patriots in that though.

Oh and Ryan has a superbowl ring already.

First, congrats to the Jets for coming into Foxboro and winning on their terms.

But seriously, Bart Scott has seriously taken 'low class' to a new low. You'd think someone would praise the other team to make themselves look better. I guess the Jets "D" is just above a nosebleed? What a schmuck.
