NHL 2008

Yeah, well we lost at home tonight to Montreal. I'm going to shut up now.

-Mike

LOL (at bolded text)

I'm sure Montreal played a dirty game as usual.

On the World Juniors. I watched a bit of a rerun of the Canada/Czech game. Man Canada couldn't have capitialized the opening round better. My boy Tokarski is the net minder for the Spokane Chiefs and he is backed up by the goalie for the Tri-City Americans; two WHL teams. It was cool to see him on TV. Tokarski led the Chiefs to a (broken) Memorial Cup last year. It is no surprise that he is #1 for Canada this year.

Diving and Cherry Picking don't show up on stat sheets. :D

EDIT:

Nor do things like this when the refs don't call them.

Sorry. I'm just not a big fan of Kovalev.

Do you you really think his elbow is in the air in that video ?

What I see is Gagné turning , so his center of gravity is very low, normal when you "sharp turn".

PS ; I really like Gagne , he's from just around here.....

Respectfully,

No his elbow isn't up but that doesn't mean it isn't an elbow or a dangerous hit to the head. I have a feeling we are going to have to agree to disagree on this.

I see Kovalev elbowing a guy in the head who is returning from only playing 30 or so games the previous season due to concussion problems. I see a player who thinks he is making a hockey play but is only endangering the safety of another player. I see him getting away with it too.

Gagne made his pass. He no longer has possession of the puck. Kovalev should have and could have let up.

I too really like Gagne. Between him and Richards it is a toss up of who my favorite player is. I am concerned for his long term health because concussions are problematic and chronic conditions and that is a big reason why I take exception to Kovalev's elbowing him.

Like I said; we are probably going to have to agree to disagree; which is fine with me.

Yeah , what happened to Bergeron in Boston again.....
Sad for him and for the team who were doin' so well , heck they joined SJ at the top of the league :bassist:

For sure. I know he hurt himself this time around.

Last season Jones put Bergeron into the boards with a hit from behind giving him a concussion. Jones was ejected from the game and suspended I think five games; which is warranted.

In retrospect; the pace of this game is very high. I can see where competitiveness comes in and taking space away from a guy but at what cost?....I can see that Kovalev may not have had time to let up, but if the league is so concerned with hits to the head, there needs to be some consistency in calling such hits, which that elbow to Gagne clearly was a hit to the head. No penalty was called.

I think the hope is that keeping these rules in place and as the game progresses, players will develop; from a young level on, the reaction time needed to make the decision to let up on a guy.

I thought about watching it. Not sure If I'll be up in time to catch it though (not sure what time it is). I watched a rerun of last years. It was kinda weird. There were no fans near the glass to bang on the boards so that was counter-intuitive. The snow buildup made for some interesting passing. The puck moved real slow through all that mush.

10AM our time. The Pens come on later in the day, but that isn't until 4PM our time. We get to tangle with the Bruins, in Boston.

The Pens will overlap a little bit with Penn State in the Rose Bowl, so I'll be doing some split screen viewing for about an hour or so. :D

San Jose comes to the Joe as the Hot Team, Wings put it to them 6-0. The Hockey World is talking about the Hottest team in Hockey's chance to be tied with the Wings after this home and home stand. Wings 4, Black Hawks 0, It's not gonna be. The Wings while not 100% (Osgood and Lindstrom are nursing minor injuries) will be there win it's all said and done. Hockeytown still rules (It has to-look at our football team:D)

Flyers get a tough win in Vancouver tonight. Carter gets his 27th, Hartnell gets one while playing with a broken toe, and the kid, Jonathan Kalinsky gets his first-ever NHL goal. Biron looked sharp.

The bad news is that Gagne got plastered into the boards about 15 seconds into the game and never returned. "Upper body injury" is all they're saying.

Here is hoping it isn't a concussion. Upper Body always seems to be shoulder, elbow, arm etc. One can only hope. Now would be a good time for Briere to come back.

Entertaining game for sure. I had dinner guests but the game was on in the background and I got to give the 3rd period full attention. I was impressed by Biron. Cool to see Jon Kalinsky get his first and Carter get that league leading 27th goal. Hartnell looked good, very physical presence on that line and a goal to boot.

I thought Giroux looked good too taking Gagne's place. He is a good offensive talent and I see a lot of Gags in him. A player for the future of the Flyers.

How about the Tim Horton's sign breaking free from the boards. :D. Anxious moments as I thought the refs would blow a whistle to get that debris of the ice. You don't see that everyday.

Also got to watch the USA shelacking of Kazakhstan in the World Jrs. It was cool to watch Flyers prospect van Riemsdyk and Spokane Chiefs' Bowman, Johnson and Wahl play on TV. Tomorrow will be USA and Canada. A good game in Ottawa for sure. I may try to catch it.

digging up the ole NHL 2008 thread for the first post of the 2009 (Mods; if you read this can you perhaps change the title to NHL 2008-09?).

Flyers managed to get a shootout win against a pretty evenly matched Anaheim Ducks. (both teams were 6th in their respective conferences entering that game). Ossi Vaananen nets his first as a Flyer with a pretty point shot off a faceoff win by Richards. Coburn got a great garbage goal down low as Knuble tried to bank on in off of Giggy from a bad angle. Josh Gratton gets his first as a Flyer and 3rd if his career. Knuble also gets one off a great one-timer pass from Richards. I have to give props to my man Mike Richards. He assisted on three of those 4 goals and got the Game Winner in the shootout. He is turning into a solid leader after a rough start to this season.

Props to the Ducks too. They pulled away a bit (3-1 in the second and 4-3 in the third) but the Flyers bounced back and answered each time. Alberts got put into the boards cleanly on a PK which left Getzlaf all by himself on Biron's right to accept a pass and shoot one home.

Good to see the Flyers get a shootout win which they rarely achieve (2 and 3 this year). I always cringe if the game doesn't end in OT.

Philly moves into a tie; with the Rangers, for 1st place in the division and is seeded 3rd overall in the conference. Technically the are ahead of the Rags because they have played one fewer game. They can solidify that with a win in LA tonight and a loss by the Rags who play the Caps tonight.

EDIT: Gagne should be back from a Shoulder injury soon. No concussion.
