NHL Season 2018-19

It's brutal watching the Hawks play this year. In many ways, they're as capable as they've ever been, but in ways that count most, they've completely fallen apart.

In other words, they play solid hockey most of the time and then experience a breakdown that costs them a goal.

Last night's game against the Knights was a case in point. They started aggressively and skated hard and gave themselves some chances. But two horribly blown coverages in their own zone quickly got them down 2-0.

2nd period they played a lot smarter and they had plenty of good scoring chances. The next thing I knew they were tied 2-2.

Hawks kept pouring it on and actually took the lead in the middle of the 3rd, 3-2.

And then the wheels fell off the wagon. Some truly boneheaded defensive lapses saw the puck hit the back of the Hawks net twice in 15 seconds and they were down 4-3.

And that's how it ended. The final 3 minutes of The game they played good hockey but against a team as good as VGK it was too little too late.

I feel sorry for Crawford. Despite the losses piling up, he's truly performing some outstanding goaltending. Virtually no soft goals at all and he's repeatedly stopping breakaways and shots from players standing open right in front of him.

I attribute the surge to the acquisition of Marcus Pettersson. He's 6'4" and plays like it.
It doesn't hurt having four of the best players in the world on the roster either. :D

Yeah, like his style, and has some good insight into the game and his team. He may be a bit of a homer (all home team play by play guys are to a point...Holy Makinaw!) but he still calls it right. And even more evidence, for all their speed and skill, the Leafs struggle against big heavy teams.

IF, and a big IF, the Pens do NOT make the playoffs, the two losses to Ottawa (in the past three weeks) will be a factor. So far a total of one point against the Sens, who certainly would fall under the category of "teams you're supposed to beat".

Trouble is, this year's Pens are in danger of falling into that category as seen by other teams in the league. I thought they may have turned the corner after impressive wins against Colorado and NYI, but evidently not yet.

The Pens had a chance to grab third place in the metro all to themselves thanks to Fleury and his guys knocking off the Islanders, but nope.
It felt so promising at first with Rust getting those goals to keep the Pens in the game.
On a side note, former Seattle Thunderbird Mathew Barzal picked up two assists for the Islanders and landed the second star of the game.

Big game tonight, top 2 teams in the league facing off. Gives us a chance to see how much progress the Leafs have made, should be a good one. In other news, Pens continue to rumble along at about a point per game clip, which should land them solidly in 9th or 10th place.

You think THAT'S bad? Flyers had a 5-3 lead over Calgary with less than 2 minutes to go. Flames pull the goalie and score, cutting it to 5-4. Score again with 7 freaking seconds left to send it to O/T. A minute and some change into O/T Johnny Gaudreau gets the game-winner for the Flames... :banghead:

I kinda felt sorry for the Blackhawks after the CAPS bitcheslapped them on Tuesday night then they had to go back home and play the Pens Wednesday night. Guess they got their legs back pretty quick.

Just noticed the Leafs are averaging less than a point-per-game over their last 4, only 1 win with losses to Detroit, Boston, and TB. At that rate they'll soon be battling those pesky Penguins for 9th or 10th place. ;) :D

Bruins v Pens tonight. After going 0 for Florida last week, the B's had nice wins over Ottawa (in OT) and Arizona (in regulation) this week. Moving Krejci up to the first line to replace Bergeron has rejuvenated Marchand and Pastrnak -if you like tic-tac-toe goals look at the highlights of the Arizona game - Marchand fed Pastrnak for one and Pastrnak fed Marchand for another with Krejci getting the 2nd assist in both. Moving Krejci also gives the Donato-Karlsson-Heinen a chance to develop together.
