NHL Season 2019-20

Flyers lose in a Shootout against the Leafs. Shootout went 11 rounds...

A lost day for the state of Pennsylvania.
I thought the Pens outplayed the Oilers, but Edmonton still snuck out of town with the OT win. The Pens got off 52 shots while only giving up 22. Mike Smith saved 51 of those, so he deserves the win in this game. 51 saves, wow.
This game marked the return of Malkin who looked good today. The defense I thought played well too.
Next up, a trip to Boston on Monday to face a Bruins team who has only one regulation loss so far this season.

Thought they were going to have the backup goalies take a shot there for a while...
Ha ha!! One thing that I found curious about the Flyers. The night before last, they went to a shootout against the Devils. I couldn't understand why they didn't put Travis Konecny in the shootout rotation. And then last night, Konecny didn't get a chance until the 8th or 9th round. He was the only one to score for the Flyers. He's quick, and has some good moves. Why not use him?

Some of the shooters before him looked more like slow statues moving in on the goalie. I was beginning to wonder whether he's in Vigneault's doghouse for some reason...

Yeah, I really don't like the way a lot of shooters approach the goalie in these shootouts, just creep in slowly and wait for the goalie to make a move or open his legs. I think a bit more speed on the way in would force the goalies to move faster, and give a better shot at a goal.

My daughter sent this to me. Had to share.

Hornqvist to the injured list for what is described as 'longer term'. The Pens had one game where everyone was healthy, the Edmonton game, and they lost anyway.
It's a bummer not having Hornqvist on the ice, but I think Sullivan will find a way to survive while he's out.

Crazy game.
Bruins up 3-0, Pens switched goalies then score 4 unanswered, B's score next 2 to go ahead and 1 empty netter for the final 6-4. End to end action pretty much the entire game.

Marchand got a goal by hitting the post and having the puck bounce off the goalie and I to the net.

Crazy indeed. Way more goals than I like, but it was fun.
That fifth goal off Jarry's back went in twice. Crosby tried to clear it, but when he hit the puck, it went off Jarry again and into the net. Boston deserved two points for one goal.
I thought it was also a fairly called game.

Much like how it went in Boston, the Pens rolled into Brooklyn and got buried in a 3-0 hole by the Islanders.
Much like how it went in Boston, the Pens then ripped off four straight goals.
Much like how it didn't go in Boston, the fourth goal was the OT winner.
I'm impressed how they hung in there and stayed with the game despite the big hole. These kind of wins can mean more to a team than winning 7-4 or 4-0.

Too bad Simon couldn't finish that sweet between his legs pass from Crosby in the first.
Good to see Rust and Malkin working hard to get that game winner. The Pens really earned this win.
Good bye 10 game winning streak Islanders.

Gotta admire the Pens' tenacity, never giving up and fighting back until the final whistle blows. Now if they can just figure out a way not to NEED that tenacity by not getting down 3 goals.

Read something after yesterday's game...the Pens are responsible for ending the two longest win streaks in Islanders history. The 10-game streak now, and a 15-game streak back in the early 80s. That still doesn't make up for the Islanders ending the Pens' Cup run back in the early 90s, though. David frickin' Volek. :rage:

Hate seeing the injuries especially on a young man ( Sam Morin ) with so much potential. 2 seasons in a row it's all he's been, potential. The long road to recovery ( again ) begins now.
Yeah, that one really sucks. Same injury two years in a row.

The last time the Flyers played the Leafs, the Leafs won in a shootout that went 11 rounds. I questioned why Konecny didn't get a chance until the 8th or 9th round of the shootout. Konecny scored the only goal for the Flyers in that shootout, but the Leafs got the win.

Fast forward to last night, when those two teams met again. Once again it went to a shootout. This time, Vignault sent Konecny out as the first Flyer shooter. Of course, he did NOT score (making me look bad!). :D But Giroux and Couturier both scored to win it for the Flyers in a much shorter shootout (3 shooters each).

The Flyers last two games went to a shootout, with Couturier getting the winner in both. Against the Canadiens in the game before the Leafs game, Cary Price stood on his head in goal. It could easily been 6-0 Flyers after the 1st period. Instead it was 2-0, with Price making amazing save after amazing save. The Canadiens lost in the aforementioned shootout, but Price almost single-handedly was responsible for them getting a point out of it.

Time for Malkin to step up with Crosby out again. He sure did against Chicago Saturday, a game the Pens looked like they had no chance winning after getting in a 2-0 hole.
Something is clicking in the locker room with Sullivan and his players. I like it so far.
