I didn't watch any part the all star game events. I've gotten more and more bored with it every year, and I just couldn't scrounge up enough interest to tune in this year.

NHL Season 2021-22

That, and the NHL TV agreements are a mess. I consider myself a hockey fan, but I had no idea the all star game was happening and no idea of the event schedule once I figured it out.
A Saturday all star game? When did this start?
For years I gladly payed for Center Ice, and now that's gone too in favor of some deal with ESPN. Whatever.
I haven't seen them advertise a free game on TV yet this year.
There has been some kind of shift in their approach to programming at the NHL offices. I don't have a clue what it is anymore, but it's left this lifetime fan behind. The fact that they're all excited about Las Vegas clues me in that I'm not the kind of fan they are after these days.

ESPN has carried a few free games. Too few and too far between. Any time I'm not playing(bass, that is), I check for games. I prefer teams I care about, but I'll take what I can get and/or watch NHL highlight programs.
^ This. Yes, just as I had to do with the Winter Classic last month, I had to go online and search for which channel the events were going to be on. ESPN? ABC? TNT? TBS? Skills Event was on ESPN, the game(s) were on ABC. Then ABC cuts away as soon as the final game was over, not even carrying the post-game wrap-up and MVP award. But oh boy, starting 2/26 they'll be showing a Saturday afternoon game on ABC for the last 1/4 of the season. Geez, thanks.
I always appreciated what NBCSN had going on, seemed like the NHL was important to them. Now, the TV situation is an absolute joke. I don't even bother trying to find a game on TV anymore. I'll always be a hockey fanatic, but as you succinctly put it, I'm also not their target demographic evidently. And 100% agree with you about Vegas.
Pens down 2-0 and Bruins outplaying them early. Was afraid of a blowout. But as the Pens are capable of doing, they rebound nicely and end with a well-earned 4-2 win in Boston.
And of course, Marchand doing Marchand stuff...again. Enjoy the press box for a few days, Brad.

Not a Marchand-or Bruins-fan, but he's such a good player, I don't understand his need for the shenanigans.
I got a flurry of text messages when Boston went up 2-0 after one from my New England buddies. Then they all went quiet.
I didn't send one text back, but rather let them gnash their teeth as that lead evaporated and turned into a loss with four unanswered Pen goals.
It's not very often that Pittsburgh beats Boston, so I was glad.

Yeah, he even had a 100-pt season a while back, mostly by cleaning up his act and concentrating on playing hockey. But all too often he reverts back to this version of his 14-yr-old self.
Ditto with Tom Wilson...as much as I loathe that guy and some of the crapola he pulls, he actually is a decently-skilled player. But there's some sort of trigger in their brains that makes these two do stupid things too often.
Back in the good old days in Detroit, Joe Kocur or Bob Probert would have taken care of the problem.
The first time the two teams played after Probert was traded to Chicago, we saw them talking to each other during the game. They were smiling, and we knew they were planning the main event. Sure enough, late third period they dropped the gloves and went at it. Still laughing, just two old friends catching up. The fans expected a fight, and that's what they got. You could see them jawing at each other in the penalty box. Not angry, not malicious, just laughing and busting each other's chops.

I remember Marty McSorley took on Probert at a game in Detroit, and Marty gave a damn good showing, with Probert finally getting the edge. Longest fight I'd ever seen, as McSorley had no back-down in his persona, and kept going and going. When it was over, as the linesmen separated the two very tired combatants, Probert patted McSorley's head as if to say 'well done'. That kind of respect is something you only see in hockey.

There was a video on YouTube with players miked up, and it was cool to hear what some of these guys had to say after certain fights. Sure, there's the usual "I'm gonna kick your ___" and "this ain't over" but there was also more than a few "you ok?" and "good job" being said between them. Respect.

I've noticed that quite a few of the commentators this season have expressed the opinion that goalies have been going down to the ice too early and too often, resulting in a disproportionate number of goals due to the goalie not being able to maneuver well enough from their knees.
Tonight on ESPN, Gretzky said the said thing and even suggested that it might be a good idea for goalies to consider if it might be better to go back to an older style, where they stay up on their skates more.
Having played goal for years (admittedly in amateur leagues), and also closely following the skills of NHL goalies since I was a kid, I'd be inclined to agree. But I'm an old fart and I could very well be wrong.
Anyone here have an opinion on the matter?

Watching that is definitely on my to-do list. I was at work when I posted the video link and couldn't watch the documentary then. That would be severely frowned upon doing that on company time!
Not so much an opinion on the current goaltending style but just remembering all things are cyclical. When one team has success, all the other teams try to replicate that style. Same thing with individual players. If I remember correctly, Tony Esposito was one of the first of the butterfly-style goalies, and that trend caught on for quite some time, then Ken Dryden's upright style was the next trend. I won't even get into Dominik Hasek's flopping-around-like-a-fish style, but hey, no doubt he was the best for quite a while.

I am a Bruins and Marchand fan. His GM, coaches, and teammates have had the same conversation with him and to his credit he has kept a lid on it for 3+ years. While I have some issues with the soft NHL discipline for incidents against the Bruins over the last few years, I have no issue with the suspension that Marchand just got.
This has been a pretty frustrating season for the Bruins and that was a pretty frustrating game (going ahead 2 goals, giving back the lead, Bergeron goes out on a clean hit, Rask announces his retirement). Doesn't excuse the behavior at all, it is context. There were hopes that a healthy Rask would give the B's a chance in the SCP, those hopes are now dashed, and with it, the Bergeron-Marchant-(Krejci + Rask) window is closed. They'll probably limp into the playoffs but will likely be one and done. Now the B's are looking at a rebuilding around Pastrnak-McAvoy-Carlo, that is a good core, but more is needed to be a legit contender.
It was interesting seeing Krejci-and Frolik-playing for Czk in the Olympics yesterday. I can't keep up with all the movements/retirements/etc. every year
There was loose talk about the possibility of Krejci coming back to the B's after the Olympics, but with Rask retiring, little chance became no chance.
Coyotes reach an agreement with Arizona State University's arena for the next three seasons, since the City of Glendale decided not to re-up their lease at Gila River Arena. The university's barn only holds about 5000. I was somewhat surprised to the see the Yotes are averaging 11,600, roughly 68% capacity. I didn't think it was that high.

Contrary to popular belief, there really are a lot of hockey fans locally, although a certain percentage are from other NHL cities. A more centrally-located arena would no doubt boost those numbers, as would a competitive team. Truthfully, the current roster of players really do play hard and have plenty of fight in them, just not a ton of talent throughout the squad at the moment. But with the plethora of draft picks they've stockpiled in this novel approach to their rebuild, I'm hoping that in 3-4 years they will be a contender. Shane Wright would help, no doubt.
