NHL Season 2021-22

Coyotes reach an agreement with Arizona State University's arena for the next three seasons, since the City of Glendale decided not to re-up their lease at Gila River Arena. The university's barn only holds about 5000. I was somewhat surprised to the see the Yotes are averaging 11,600, roughly 68% capacity. I didn't think it was that high.

2021-2022 NHL Attendance - National Hockey League - ESPN

Contrary to popular belief, there really are a lot of hockey fans locally, although a certain percentage are from other NHL cities. A more centrally-located arena would no doubt boost those numbers, as would a competitive team. Truthfully, the current roster of players really do play hard and have plenty of fight in them, just not a ton of talent throughout squad at the moment. But with the plethora of draft picks they've stockpiled in this novel approach to their rebuild, I'm hoping that in 3-4 years they will be a contender. Shane Wright would help, no doubt. :)
I was a bit surprised to see the Panthers percentages, but they're winning this year. Most years the 'fair weather' fans stay home. And, of course, numbers get inflated by visitors to South FL who are cheering for the other team(s). Tampa, meantime, loves the Bolts.
My daughter, who lives in Orlando, and I get to a few Lightning games each year. I'm always amazed how loud stick on puck, puck on boards, puck offa pipes, etc. are compared to on TV. I've gotten hearing aids since the last game we attended. I'm prolly gonna hafta turn them waaay down.

This is pretty embarrassing for the NHL. Its shocking and infuriating that Bettman backed this franchise staying in Phoenix for so many years yet was apparently ready to let the Oilers move at the drop of a hat when there was question about them getting a brand new publicly funded rink (ok 50%).

That said the Oilers are on their 10th coach since 2008. They keep changing everything except the real problem.

I am a Bruins and Marchand fan. His GM, coaches, and teammates have had the same conversation with him and to his credit he has kept a lid on it for 3+ years. While I have some issues with the soft NHL discipline for incidents against the Bruins over the last few years, I have no issue with the suspension that Marchand just got.

Marchand punched Penguins goaltender Trustan Jarry in the head with his right fist during a scrum in front of the net.
. . .
While being restrained by a linesman, Marchand swung his stick at Jarry as he skated by.
. . .
The punching and swinging of his stick at Jarry wasn't Marchand's only interactions with the Penguins goaltender throughout the night. As the second period came to a close, Jarry lifted the puck onto his stick and looked like he was going to flip it to a Penguins fan in the crowd. However, Marchand skated by and knocked the puck off of Jarry's stick, so he couldn't toss it into the crowd.

Bruins' Brad Marchand suspended six games for punching Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry in head

What is wrong with him ???

I saw this comment on another NHL board. From my perspective, this guy hit the nail on the head...

"GM Holland brings back Koskinen and Smith to be the goalies and acquires/signs Keith, Barrie, and Cici to play in front of them. Pays Nurse more than Makar.

Blames Tippet when they suck."

:laugh: Isn't that the real job of a GM??

First major trade of the new year, Montreal sending Tyler Toffoli to Calgary. Quite a few teams were after his services, and oddly enough , he was actually happy playing in Montreal despite the very difficult season the team is having. And he's under contract for another two years at only a $4.25M cap hit. Great deal for the Flames, IMO.

I don't. The NFL is pro about keeping itself relevant even without games. The off season drama is ridiculous. I used to watch all the games years ago. Fortunately, they banned the office pool where I work many years ago and that pretty much ended it for me...thankfully.

The NHL isn't perfect but it's better than the NFL. And games are more exciting. The NFL with it's 5-8 seconds of action followed by 40 seconds of waiting, and then do it again, is not a great formula for excitement or interest.

Yeah, I watch NFL, IF one of "my" teams(Miami, Tampa Bay)is playing. Or if there's nothing else on.
