Unfortunately, all too often All-Star selections reward the player's previous season(s) rather than the current one. Ask Nazem Kadri.So NHL.com has Shesterkin in the top 3 for the Vezina trophy(#1 actually) yet he doesn't make the all star game. Seems logical.
Nothing like consistency.Sheesh, Pens win something like 17 out of 19, then lose three in a row AT HOME to teams like Seattle, Detroit, and LA.
The Blackhawks held a town hall meeting in Chicago earlier today to publicly discuss what measures the organization will be undertaking to move forward as a team, now that the report from the independent investigation into the sexual assault scandal involving former assistant coach Brad Aldrich has been released.
A member of the sports media asked Rocky Wirtz Blackhawks' owner and Chairman) what steps the team would be taking to keep sonething similar from happening in the future.
Wirtz' response was was astonishing - and not in a good way.
"I think the report speaks for itself," Wirtz said. "The people that were involved are no longer here. We're not looking back at 2010; we're looking forward. And we're not going to talk about 2010."
When pressed again to discuss the Blackhawks' plans to protect players in the future, Wirtz doubled down further.
"What we're going to do today is our business. I don't think it's any of your business," Wirtz said. "Because I don't think it's your business. You don't work for the company. If someone in the company asked that question, we'll answer it, and I think you should get on to the next subject. We're not going to talk about Kyle Beach. We're not going to talk about anything that happened.
"We're moving on. You want to keep asking the same question? What more do I have to say? You want to hear the same answer? What's your next question?"
Another reporter followed up and questioned why the Blackhawks pledged transparency in the process of hiring a new general manager but refused to answer a question about the Beach lawsuit.
"I answered [that question]," Wirtz said. "I told you to get off the subject. We're not going to talk about the report [on Beach]. We read it. We're moving on. I think you're out of line. I don't like your questions. Why don't you ask about something else? Why don't you ask about the GM search? Or something else? Why do you bring up old business?"

What the heck was he thinking? He just guaranteed that everybody in the sports media will have this on their front page for the next few days, and it will be widely discussed for some time to come.

Lack of compassion for the victim seems to be trending in our society right now. He seems more angry that the organizations attempt to bury this failed more than the fact it happened.
I'm seeing some reports that Wirtz might have a personal grudge against this particular reporter, and that's the reason for the angry tirade.
Maybe so, but that doesn't explain the content of his statements. Wirtz said that everybody who was culpable in the scandal is long gone and that's the end of it. There are a whole lot of people who doubt that.
Many suspect that upper management (including Rocky Wirtz hinself) knew about the abuse the entire time and tried to cover it up. If that concern isn't addressed, then this whole scandal will just continue to fester.
Wirtz making a public statement saying, "The people that were involved are no longer here." isn't good enough. This isn't going to just disappear because Rocky says it's all behind us and we're moving on, so don't ask any more questions because "it's none of your business".
I can't help thinking that an incident like this could easily infect the mood of the Blackhawks players. They're already a struggling team, and the last thing they need is an organizational scandal swirling around while they're trying to concentrate of winning hockey games.

All-Star weekend has arrived. Like many of us, I enjoy the Skills Competition events more than the actual All-Star game, although I admit to liking the current 3-on-3 version. The older regular 5-on-5 version was a borefest, as it was usually played at half-speed, and defending was non-existent at best. Having skilled players with a lot of open ice makes for a much more exciting exhibition, IMHO.
Okay, that was cringe worthy. Have to say Zegras' blindfolded breakaway goal was fun, but when Mike Tyson appeared dragging a stuffed tiger across the ice, I had had enough and turned the debacle off.
I didn't know it was all star weekend until I investigated why the Penguins aren't playing again until Tuesday. I thought they were taking a break to watch the Olympics.
I used to like the skills competitions, but they are too commercialized these days for my liking. Everything now has to have a sponsor. No thanks.

The all star game was tonight and it was a three on three tournament between the central and metropolitan divisions?
What happened to the Sunday all star game between the east and west conference played in a regular game format?

There were 4 20-minute games consisting of two 10-minute periods. 3 on 3 hockey except on a power play when it was 4 on 3. (I think there was only one penalty called.)
The first game pitted the Metro against the Pacific (won by the Metro). The second was the Atlantic vs. the Central (won by the Central.
Then the Metro faced off against the Central in the final. The Metro won, and will split $1,000,000.00. Additionally, Claude Giroux was named the MVP, and won a Honda Passport. I'm thinking he was solidifying his value for the upcoming trade deadline. He's a great player and captain, andI love Giroux; but he doesn't have a lot of good years left. So I'd like to see him get a chance to get a Cup playing for a contender. We all know he won't get one if he stays with the Flyers. (Sigh...)
Oh, and Mike, I agree with you about the Skills Competition. I used to love it, but it's become a farce. I do kinda' like the 3 on 3 concept though for the game itself.
I kind of LIKE the 3 on 3 format. The "regular" old style All-Star Games were just 60 minutes of zero defense and zero hitting. So it wasn't really like an NHL game anyway.
So if you're not gonna' hit or play solid defense, why not shorten the periods and open up the ice with the 3 on 3? It's just a glorified exhibition game anyway. Not like "real" hockey!

5 on 5, 3 on 3, doesn't matter. It's still boring. They were all coasting until they got a chance to score. There's no defense. The only players that break a sweat are the goalies, and I feel sorry for them because there's no defense. It's a popularity poll and I'm sure the players would all rather be watching the Olympics.
