No Malkin news, but the Pens shocked us again with a six-year deal for Rickard Rakell. AAV of $5M. He likely could have gotten a bit more on the open market but probably not for six years.
After the six-years given to Rust, Letang, and Rakell, the max three year offer to Geno must really feel like an insult. At least in his mind. NHL Network's Mike Rupp said last night that Malkin should NOT feel disrespected but realize it's a business, and deal with it.

I hope Murray does well in Toronto, I certainly harbor no ill will toward him. He is what he is...an average-at-best NHL goalie. Perhaps with a better defense than what he had in Ottawa (or even in Pittsburgh) he'll regain some of his rookie form, but I can't say for sure whether the Leafs D is any better at the moment. As one Canadiens blogger already stated, "here's next year's first-round-exit scapegoat".

I guess the hope is that the Leafs will be able to score their way around Murray's "mistakes", like the Pens did for a couple of very successful seasons....
I have no doubt Matt Murray is a nice human being and he certainly suffered a tragedy losing his father early in his career. On the ice though, he just ain't that good. Never was.
He looked great playing behind and next to Fleury, who was the one carrying that team, never was it Murray. Rutherford went all in on Murray after a couple impressive games and sent one of the greatest, if not the greatest, goalie of all time in Pittsburgh on down the road in favor of a young guy who looked great because of Fleury. Murray never once looked as impressive or dominant again once Fleury was gone.
Yeah, I get it. All the numbers and stats made sense to let Fleury go in the expansion draft, but that was a prime moment for a crafty, seasoned, intelligent GM to make it work so Fleury could stay in Pittsburgh and get the most for Murray. Nope, Rutherford was already convinced Murray was his man. He was so, so wrong.
It just blows me away that teams keep giving him the chances. He's not worth it.

Yeah, you're probably right about the one and done. But I'd rather pay our trio their $24M and make the playoffs. Looking at the Blackhawks situation...they'll be paying Kane/Toews/Jones $30.5M and be playing golf in April.
Speaking of which, saw where Scotty Bowman has stepped down as a consultant for the 'hawks. Couldn't believe he's 88 yrs old!

I am jealous. I always liked him as a Pen. Solid defensemen who performs when it matters most, the playoffs. Rutherford ran him off for who knows why. Oh yes, I remember now. For some stupid reason, Rutherford was infatuated with Brassard, and Cole was a casualty of that infatuation.

I loved Cole in a Pens uni. Steady, shot-blocking D-man who can play physical. Still don't know why he was traded away. The odd thing though, he is becoming a journeyman, now on his seventh team. But he certainly played his best hockey as a Penguin. Would have liked to see him return.
Dang, Devils traded Pavel Zacha to Bruins for Erik Haula, who I'm not familiar with. Zacha never really reached his potential, I don't think, but I was hoping they would give up on him.
I hope they do well. I like the NHL better when they Canadian teams are good. I have no attachment to Canada other than living right below them, but it just feels right to me to see Canadian NHL teams winning more than losing.

Agreed. It was nice seeing Edmonton go as far as they did this post-season, and Toronto came pretty close to advancing, only losing a tough game 7 to the Bolts.
I mostly just like seeing teams turn things around, going from cellar-dwellers to competent to becoming playoff teams and eventually a contender. Ottawa, Buffalo, and a few others are starting to look respectable again.
