That's when I was a rabid fan living in the Detroit suburbs. I still enjoy watching hockey, but I don't feel it as deeply or scream myself hoarse anymore.

Under today's rules the Wings would have beaten the Devils in 1995. That's how effective the Trap and clutching and grabbing was back then. The Devils were masters at it. The rules were changed because of them.

I'd seen the Russian Five previously and usually end up watching a bit whenever I come across it. Not a Wings fan at all but certainly respected those teams of Yzerman, Shanahan, Lidstrom, etc. And Sergei Fedorov was one of the most fluid skaters ever to play the game IMO, just a pleasure watching him turn and glide, just so smooth-skating.

One thing I never realized until recently was how much Slava Kozlov contributed. I'd always thought of him as a mediocre third-liner but evidently he was more than that, as he'd totaled 853 points in his career. Also didn't realize he'd spent almost as much time as an Atlanta Thrasher as he did a Red Wing.

Wow! Never expected a SIX YEAR deal, as I'd heard they were balking at giving him more than 3-4 yrs. It's gotta be heavily front-loaded, and I'm sure little or no trade protection for those last couple of years. Still, fantastic news in Pensburgh!

Now to get Malkin and hopefully Rackell and Rodrigues back in the fold!

EDIT: Just looked it up on CapFriendly..it is front-loaded with modified NTC in years 5-6.

Most any other player I'd be very skeptical, but Letang is a fitness fiend and keeps himself in top physical condition. And even at age 35, he's coming off his best year offensively of his career. Yes, it's risky, but if you're gonna roll the dice with an 'old' guy, it might as well be Tanger.

Now Malkin, on the other hand, also 35, but no way in heck would I give him that much term at any salary. He's still a point-per-game player, but too many intangibles with him to invest that length of contract.

Shane Wright (who was expected to go #1 in the draft for a long time) dropped to #4 and the Kraken grabbed him. Had the lottery not been unkind to the Flyers, they'd have been able to snag him at #4. They finished 4th from the bottom, but Seattle jumped ahead of them thanks to the lottery.

As it was, the Flyers selected Cutter Gauthier with the #5 pick. Fairly big (6'3"?) left winger, but the Flyers will probably move him to Center when he eventually gets called up.

Not too surprised the Canadiens went with Slafkovsky first overall, but shocked to see Wright drop to fourth. Devils didn't need another center, and the Yotes had their eyes on Cooley, so Seattle gets lucky. Wright isn't the textbook 'generational talent' (not the next Crosby or McDavid), but not much doubt he will still turn out to be a star. Actually, I think him going to the Kraken will work out just fine for him. He'd be under so much pressure and scrutiny in Montreal, especially as a non-French kid, while in Seattle he has a chance to become the face of the franchise, with nowhere near the pressure from both media and fan base.

Meanwhile, the Blackhawks are looking to become the Coyotes of the Mid-west. Getting very little in return for a two-time 41-goal scorer who's only 24 yrs old in DeBrincat, and unloading Dach to Montreal. Ottawa did great in that deal...getting immediate help instead of a pick who is a year or two away from contributing. Yes, DeBrincat comes with a $9M qualifying offer next year, but hopefully the Sens can work around that by signing him to a team-friendlier extension prior to that point of RFA status. Either way, he'll be a massive upgrade this coming season.

Supposedly there was a deal in place to send Matt Murray to Buffalo but he declined to waive his NTC. Both teams are on the rise so maybe he feels good about the Sens chances.

But the Hawks did pick up Petr Mrazek, so there is that.....

Read an article that Malkin is pi$$ed that the Pens allegedly think he's no good anymore. Seems likely he's gonna test the free agent waters come Wednesday. Hate to lose him but if he gets to free agency some GM will certainly overpay in both dollars and term. Florida and Washington seem to be the frontrunners. :mad:

Yep.
Someone's going to think they'll get the Malkin from the early to mid 2000's.
At this point, that's fine with me. I'll miss him too, but he ain't half the player he once was.

My only problem with letting him go is who you gonna replace him with? Nobody in the system to promote and landing a top center via Free Agency is going to cost the team more than what Malkin wants. Kadri and Trocheck will cost more than Geno will and want longer term. And other than age, those two aren't bringing more to the table. Hextall, just ante up and give him the 4x$6-6.5M.

Speaking of ESPN, and seeing as the season is over, when I saw that they have come up with a Fantasy Hockey game.
now, it seems that I have actually been living under a rock in the swamp for the last 20 years so had no idea what it meant.
anyway, I downloaded the app, read about how the whole thing works and the different ways to determine who "wins" and then participated in a "mock draft" trying to put together my team.
I actually really got into it and got all stressed out scrambling as I tried to build a team with the clock ticking, while other simulated managers were snatching players to do the same thing.
have any of you done this and played for a full season?
what kind of league? head to head, or rotisserie? How did it work? Was it fun?
