NHL Season 2022-23

Ditto on the speed and quickness of NHL players vs us mortals. Played and coached for many years but I'm still in awe whenever I see the pros in action. Not only the unbelievably quick acceleration they have but their passes are harder and faster than a lot of regular guys' shots. Catching a hard pass at full stride then immediately having to negotiate the defenders while being aware of where your teammates are...makes my head spin. I had a hard enough time doing this at the amateur level, thinking to myself how the heck these pros can do it at such an exponentially quicker pace.

Always makes me shake my head when I hear some fan ragging on a player for being slow and can't skate. I've been guilty of this myself in the past. But then you see a game in person and realize even the 'slow' guys in the NHL are a helluva lot faster and quicker than they appear. Those big, slow defensemen might look like a pylon compared to a Pavel Bure or Connor McDavid but they're still way faster than I could ever hope to be!

I give you Victor Hedman. I'm amazed that big Swede moves like he does. TB has t-shirts that say "How Swede It Is".

My wife and I had a great time. Pens lost to the horrendous Sharks, but we had fun and got to see Sid and Geno score on the end we were sitting at.

Couple of things I noticed. The are fast! The hits are so much harder in person than on TV. And Evgeni Malkin is HUGE. He looks so much bigger than everyone else on the ice. He's listed as an inch shorter and 20 pounds lighter than Jeff Carter but Gino looks like a monster on the ice compared to everyone else.

And the puck/stick/wall noise is really LOUD.:)

Well, my trade "plans" for the Leafs got disrupted yesterday when the Islanders traded for Bo Horvat. My idea, was to send Morgan Rielly to Vancouver for Bo Horvat, Morgan being a Vancouver home town boy and Bo being a southern Ontario boy, what could go wrong.
Full disclosure... my nephew is married to Bo's cousin, so from a family perspective, it would be good to have him close to home.

Don't write it off just yet. Speculation is out there that if the Islanders can't seal a playoff spot by the trade deadline (March 3) they may flip Horvat. Lamoriello knows he's going to have to overpay Horvat on his new contract, and may have second thoughts on the prospect of of a huge payday if Bo doesn't make a big impression with the Isles. And Lou's got 3-4 other UFAs to deal with besides Horvat.

Not a peep about the NHL all star weekend on the ESPN website until I checked a few minutes ago. That's unfortunate, but the state of hockey in the USA. The folks who manage the ESPN website know which stories draw clicks and reads, and which don't.

That was weird.
Friday night was kind like a talent show put on by kids who had never heard of hockey, but got it as an assignment and did a quick google search.
And then a bunch of hockey players showed up at the last minute to help them put on the show.
Nurse's goal was slick.
The games Saturday were uhhh hmmm, Interesting, I guess.
At least the guys looked like they were having fun out there.
Most of them seemed to see it as a chilling out social event but people we watching them and I don't think they had any beer.
Of course my one Red Wing down here got nervous at the speed competition and didn't do as well as he knew he could, and then maybe to make up for it almost played the games like he meant it.
