I used to play amateur league hockey. One guy on my team was a former pro from the minors. Even though he was no longer anywhere near competitive professionally, he was significantly faster, stronger, and more skilled in nearly every way to anybody else in our league.
Every level that you go up, the talent increases by a huge margin. If the best AHL team played the worst NHL team, the NHL team would win 20 to 0.
My brother also played amateur hockey. His team once played a charity game against the Blackhawks alumni (retired Hawks players) and I went to see it.
The former Hawks players were clearly loafing around the ice, barely putting any effort into it because it was a friendly game for charity and they wanted to keep it interesting and fun.
My brother confirmed that his teammates were busting their butts out on the ice while the former NHL pros were barely breaking a sweat. Stan Mikita was skating circles around everybody and no one could touch him with his incredible stick handling skill, even though he was almost 60 at the time.
My bro also told me that he used some fancy move to try to take the puck away from one of his opponents (I think it might have been Cliff Koroll) and the old geezer let him think he was getting away with it for a brief moment before he grabbed my brother's stick and yanked on it, which he said felt like his arms were being ripped out of their sockets. Then the guy winked at him.
"Don't try that on me, sonny."
