Noble Amps Preamp

Well since this Covid-19 stuff hit I finally get a chance to do a paid Studio session next week with my Noble. Excited to see how this Preamp does in the studio and how well the Studio Engineer likes it lol.

I've played bass for years in church … never been paid and I'm fine with that. I've paid for some studio time, but I've never been paid to do studio time. Must be nice ;-)

It’s official for me, the Noble paired with the Cali is the place to be.

The Optical Smoothie was very close, but after much testing, this is the winner imho.

I agree that is a nice combo. Great looking board by the way.

Try a LA-1a in front of the Noble if you ever have the chance.

Scuba, did I see in a previous post you thought the Effectrode LA-1A didn't make as much of a difference when in front of the Noble compared to some other pres? I'd love to try the LA-1A in front of my Studio One someday, I feel like that would be a killer pair.

Correct. The Effectrode LA-1a has a more noticeable effect on the likes of the Oracle, P-15, Alix, etc.

I do prefer the LA-1a over the Cali76 CB in front of the Noble though.

Hmmm... I thought you said they weren’t a good pairing. Since I haven’t had any DI to FOH gigs since I got my LA-1A, I haven’t had a chance to try that, except briefly through my amp here at home.

It's not that they aren't a good pairing, its that the Effectrode doesn't make as significant of an impact as it does in front of other preamps. I usually love the LA-1a in front of anything but I wasn't wowed with the Noble/LA-1a combo.

That said, if you already have the Cali76 CB I wouldn't go out and buy a LA-1a because it probably isn't going to wow you. The Cali76 CB helps open up the sound of the Noble to my ear which may or may not be a good thing for you. Those that want even more tube feel will probably prefer the LA-1a in pairing.

Have a noble on order. Tom Petty was right you know, the waiting is the hardest part. I’m trying to forget about it so maybe it will go faster but it’s so hard to do. Haha

hey Scuba, did you get to try the PettyJohn comp with the noble? I’ve been eyeballing that comp as well as the Cali and the collaboration devices comp. the La-1a just got my radar today so... decisions decisions.

Thanks for the clarification and explanation. I'll have to give that a listen someday.

Yes I have a Cali on my board, I was just messing around. Although I’d love to try out the LA-1A one of these days. Something tells me that with my Studio One would be epic. I’ll keep my Cali/Noble combo though.
Good move. There's a reason a majority of people use the CaliCB and even Jack acknowledges the Cali is Gold with his creation.

I think @kevk has the Studio One / La-1A combo
