Oh I get that part. And I am not pushing for any particular way of doing things.
I am literally asking if building and maintaining a web site (which doesn't seem that hard to me) is simply not worth it these days. And I'm also putting out there that there are millions of us who don't FaceBook. So I suppose I am at least advising that you may be losing a significant part of your potential market.
The biggest selling point of a FB presence is that are are just shy of a billion subscribers (depending on who you talk to) - and opening an account costs you nothing out of pocket. That still doesn't mean it's 'free.' But the real cost of using FB (i.e. if you're not a paying customer, you're the product) is a whole separate topic.
That said, FB sites are far from ideal for a variety of reasons (as is FB itself) which it'd be too long to get into here. A little googling will get you links to enough pop - and serious - research articles to look at if you're interested in studying the phenomena (no other word to really descibe it) that FB is.
If you are a band, FB is probably unavoidable in the current music market if you're hoping for rapid and free exposure and ease of accessibility for your would-be fans.
But if you're serious you probably want to still host your own site to sidestep some of the lunacy and arbitrary actions FB is occasionally guilty of. Ask anybody whose account has been automatically suspended - or who's site was taken down due to a purely bogus complaint from somebody with a grudge - how easy it is to talk to somebody and get FB's decision rescinded.
Doing your own site isn't that difficult or expensive. And there's plenty of professional design help available, as well as template driven site providers that can have you up and running in no time if all you want is a basic "business card" and band blog site that can also sell merchandise.
I see FB primarily as a workable supplement to a band's web presence. But that's me. I've got over 35 years working in IT, so my perspective is probably different from most people who don't have a similar background.
