Now I have heard it all...

I got an email from the lead pastor of this church and he said he would like to speak to me regarding this incident. Im going to call. Him after wirk.

Good for you. :)

Maybe he realized the problem and hopefully wants to address it.
If that's the case it's very cool when folks admit an error and go forward.
Hope it goes well. Let us know how it works out?

The kindest thing I can say is that if I heard such things from anyone at a church, it would be confirmation that I never wanted to set foot in that church again. Whether it came from the pastor or the members, it would be clear evidence that it's nowhere I EVER want to be.

It's a narrow-minded, prejudiced, bigoted point of view. And that's the diplomatic version of my opinion.

Run.

Away.

Let them find a little storm-trooper that thinks the way they do.

Too bad you wasted your time auditioning with them. That worship leader is laughable and shouldn't have influence over people with that weak minded thinking.

I auditioned for a Christian rock band here in town. After the jam they said they would have to pray on their decision.

Two days later when they called back to offer me the gig, I told them that I talked to God and he said I shouldn't play with them because they take too long to decide on things.

The singer was silent on the other end of the phone for a second, then she said "He really said that?" I laughed and she hung up.

All of my other worship music experiences have been amazing. It's just some people use religion and faith in the worst possible ways.

No desire to specifically be in a godly band, just a band that was hitting some nice gigs at the time. It's good to gain different musical experiences. Playing with good musicians is what I seek out, regardless of genre.

I just read back through a bunch of posts and I'm waiting to hear the punch line to the OPs conversation with the worship leader.

Amusing. Just listened to "Fall off the Earth" (via your sig), btw. Not bad!

Whether just a ruse or truth, the OP sure stirred the pot here. Kinda sad IMHO to read how many posts are smakin' the pastor with quite a bit of vitriolic criticism, bigotry and/or judgmentalism ... hmmmm ya know, there's a term for this behavior. On the surface the pastor's behavior doesn't read well at all, but then me thinks all this speculating where the pastor's heart and mind were and what was truly meant by "unGodly" brings out all of our own values, beliefs, prejudices, etc., etc.

FWIW - for my first "pro" gig the band mgr (a.k.a. the money man) made me dump my SD Curlee bass for a black "P" bass cuz it fit the look he wanted. Can't have natural wood showing in a hard rock band in L.A.

Every bass I play is ungodly even the expensive ones. In the hands of an atheist, the music is pure evil.

+1. Basses can be fretted or fretless; four-string or ERB; active or passive. But no bass is godly or ungodly.

I have tried on many occasions, but I don't know that I will ever understand the minds of believers...even those who think this priest's statement was silly. The entire concept of "worship" is a trip...

FYP :D

I've played in both the secular and Christian worlds of music for years and I've run across some Christians who were given to bad theology and immature thinking to put it mildly. However I won't feed a troll. To the OP, if your post is true, then go find another church, preferably one where the pastor has an actual college education or mature thinking skills that can be respected in both the secular and religous world. Many mainstream denominations do have churches with worship teams that would gladly welcome a bass player.
