NPB: Temple Audio Design Duo 17

I use a Pelican 1535 Air for my board. It’s my old board but I still use the case. It’s great since I can have it as a carry on whenever we have fly dates.

Hi guys! Just got an used DUO 17 with just a few spare adhesive pads for the plates.
My questions is for you experts already with the TEMPLE boards:
Is it ok to use another adhesive brands with the plates? Like the options from 3MM or Scotch? Or just not, and I need to go with the original adhesives road path?
I'm asking this, because a padded tape roll can be easily cut in small pieces and used on the TEMPLE plates.. and its much more cheaper. What do you think? Thank you in advanced! ;)

After ending a 20 year run with my band, I’ve reconfigured my board as a n acoustic/ bass pedal board
A lot of toys on top, the magic is underneath.

The 4 Way Jack Patch Module

It is great that Temple offers a really cool jack patch module for their boards, but nowhere online will you find any info on how to configure it or the damage it could do to your pedals should you not!

Temple manufactures these in-house, sells them for $39 USD, and as is their norm, the quality of the product is top-notch. The 4 pairs of premium Amphenol TRS jacks inside confidently grip and support your plugs with perfect contact. The module firmly mounts to the side wall of your board, but it comes with a secret.

Not specified in words anywhere, each jack pair is "normalized." By default, all four out-facing jacks will short the inside jacks should an outside plug not be inserted. This is similar to how input jacks work on most amps. When you remove the instrument plug from the amp, there is no pop or noise, as internally, the hot input is quietly shunted to ground. With this said, the four out-facing jacks on the 4 Way Jack Patch Module are in fact all Input jacks. Should one of these four be used as an Output jack, meaning you feed the output of your last pedal on board to an inside jack, with intention to then feed your amp with the companion outside jack, the potential exists for an output short on that last pedal. Pedals typically do not like output shorts nor the damage that could result from them.

To be fair, Temple does display a technical schematic on the module housing, but it is highly-likely that not many will know the meaning of it and the implications of not.

To turn any of the four jack pairs into an output jack, one must cut the related trace on the PC board. This assumes one knows to do this! ;)

You will notice a circle on the trace in need of cutting and I highly recommend one use a small drill bit to bore a small divot and cut the trace. Do not go through the PC board, just divot out the trace by breaking the surface coating and underlying copper.

If pedals could talk, the ones with their outputs connected to this jack module would thank you for this effort.

Hey Charlie, Thanks so very much for posting this as you are correct in that Temple is not very much help and you would think that they would make at least a tiny bit of effort to explain this better. I have read through this forum and believe that I have my head wrapped around it... But I need to hear a confirmation in the most broken down way.

If I understand correctly, in its stock form all of the out-facing jacks (red in the promo pics) are inputs, and all of the in-facing jacks (black in the promo pics) are outputs. If I want a simple setup, where I plug my guitar into one of the red out-facing jacks, connect the corresponding in-facing black jack to my first pedal in the chain, then connect my last pedal to one of the other in-facing black jacks, and plug that corresponding red out-facing jack to my amp, that will work just fine. In this scenario, however, if I do not have the cable connected from my amp to the out-facing jack referenced earlier when I turn everything on, there is a solid possibility that I could cause shorting to the jack or last pedal in the chain. *EDIT* OR is it that the cable running from the last pedal to the in-facing jack HAS to be plugged in when turned on, OR is it that BOTH have to be plugged in (both in-facing from last pedal in chain and corresponding out-facing to amp) in order to avoid damage?

If I am understanding all of that correctly (please let me know if it sounds correct or not), the remedy is to:

1. MAKE SURE you always have EVERYTHING plugged in correctly prior to turning the board ON and NEVER unplug anything from the module once it is ON.
OR
2. Make the adjustment/modification to the output jack leading to the amp, which will essentially reverse the order from the stock position, to now being a permanent output to the amp or whatever else... and in this scenario, unplugging while ON or being unplugged when when turning ON the board will make NO difference and at that point there is nothing to worry about... Only caveat in this scenario being once you make this change you cannot go back..

I am sorry for more than likely repeating everything stated on this forum, but I just need to explain it in a way that makes the most sense to me and hear a yes, that is correct or no and why.. I can't thank you enough for your help on this and everything you have posted so far! I really look forward to hearing back!

The part about the amp needing to be connected is not correct if I am understanding you right. there’s no need to have an amp connected if you don’t want it / need it at the moment no damage would occur to your pedals. For example You could power up board for headphone only practice from a preamp with headphone out on the board and it doesn’t need to be connected to an amp.
The only gear you have to be really careful of always having connected when on is tube amps to speaker cabs/ load boxes. Most everything else I can think of doesn’t care if it’s connected or not.

Thanks for writing back. I think I may be more confused now.. haha. Basically, here is a very simple template of my setup (attached)... In this scenario, is there ANYTHING I need to do in order to avoid ANY sort of damage, or is the stock form of the module fine for this and I do not need to worry about unplugging or anything being unplugged at any point causing damage? I guess I am confused now in a sense that I don't understand what Charlie meant by all of this if it doesn't matter, or if it does and simply just does not apply to my particular setup.

Ok yeah I don’t see any reason the signal path you’ve describe above would cause any problems. I re read some of the earlier posts with the Le Bass pre problem and I’m guessing that’s maybe something specific/ unique to that pedal or setup ? I have set up my board this way in the past (it’s different now but only because setup has changed not because of problems. ) As well as a guitar player friend’s board with this type of routing using the 4 input jack with zero problems.

You should be fine and worst case if something does cause a shirt like the other poster had it wouldn’t be the kind that damages anything just something that doesn’t complete a circuit resulting in no sound but no harm to the pedal so no fear with this.

Also I saw mentioned earlier that temple support wasn’t very helpful or responsive , this hasn’t been my experience with them. They were very responsive and helpful with some questions I had on the 4 jack module and even gave me some really helpful tips. So I’d definitely reach out to them or try again if you already have.

Chances are that if you do not end up modifying your module, you and your pedals will be just fine, but I stand by the fact that a short condition will exist at the last pedal. This is easily confirmed using a conductivity tester.
