But that's exactly what I was saying - so I have contributed to dozens of different types of thread over the last few days - about Double Bass, Classical Music,Jazz Scales, Historical Jesus etc etc

But these are the only two you have bothered to read! :hmm:

hey...just dropping into say as a brit when i saw the first post i thought it was some kind of tounge in cheek statement...the american contingent are missing out on some great stuff in old blighty!!!!

Oasis are massive in the UK and do big tours in the US.

But as for being "Beatles huge"... most of Oasis's songs are heavily Beatles-influenced to the point of being rip offs. They're decent, did some great songs back in the 90s, but they are overrated, not underrated, imo.

There was a time when I liked Oasis, but even then I viewed them as a guilty pleasure. A fun, strongly retro act with some catchy songs. I viewed Lenny Kravitz in much the same way..

I wouldn't say I really dislike them now, but I've just kind of moved on and their last couple albums haven't done anything to draw me back in.

As for them having incredible potential, I don't see it that way. They weren't really breaking any new musical ground as their sound is very derivative of 60's rock, so I think there was always a ceiling on them unless they were to reinvent themselves and their music like U2 did with Achtung Baby.

I think their current bassist Andy Bell uses a Burns Bison bass

Oasis always kinda bored me, except that maybe 10-20% of their tunes were incredibly catchy. They got a lot better after Andy Bell (from Ride) and Gem Archer (from Heavy Stereo) joined... I think my fave tune from them is "The Hindu Times" ....

I never really dug Oasis before I became a "musician". Now I definitely see what all the fuss is about.

If you can't understand why this band is famous and liked as much, I'd say you failed to understand the taste in music of this generation. Oasis is far from perfect, but they have this je ne sais quoi that definitely puts them above the rest in today's pop world. If you fail to identify that mojo factor which is the sole reason for their fame, it's pretty fair to say you have no clue what people want to hear these days, IMHO.

What is "your generation" pray tell?

I know the majority of people in my generation would watch paint dry than listen to the tired old stuff Oasis are putting out, and I was growing up when Oasis got big. I loved them, 12 years ago. Things have moved on since then though and Oasis' music hasn't aged well, IMHO!

Agreed. However I was talking about the first few albums. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I saw them May 94 at the Sheffield Leadmill, just before they broke big. The support acts (two local unsigned bands who I've never heard of since) blew them out of the water. I never rated them that night and hence never jumped on the bandwagon when it really started rolling for them.

However, I've since taken a bit more notice and I actually quite like them now. Prefer the ones that Noel sings though.
