I am 69, thinning on top, but otherwise have a decent head of hair. My wife and I enjoy a lot of movies from the 1940s, especially in the film noir genre. As a result, I found myself really digging the look of a fedora with a snap brim angled down on one side in front. I have not yet worn one onstage anywhere, but I might choose to do so. If some folks don't like it.... Well, golly gee, I guess I will just cry myself to sleep.

People always remember that rule of etiquette, but forget the part of the rule that says you can wear your hat if the establishment doesn't provide a hat rack.

Indeed, and how often do you see a hat rack anywhere nowadays? I do not recall seeing any since maybe back in the 1960s, and I think those were just some old ones that had been there for a long time and had not yet been removed.

I wear a hat all the time for that reason and to cut down the effects of cataracts and glaucoma. Could be worse...I could wear sunglasses as well .

Definitely not just a bass players thing. Guitar players wear some hats I wouldn't wear to a dog fight. I played with one for years. I think he would have worn a road kill if he would have thought about it. Hats worn on stage look dorky. Why wear one? I think of them as some do of cargo shorts.

I can't agree with this at all. Stylish hats can look great on stage but not everyone looks good in a hat. Three of our band members wear hats and all of them look good.
Not all hats or hat wearers are created equal. Choose carefully.
Having said that, I would never be seen dead wearing a hat in a car.

On the other hand, I don't wear it on stage. My wife made it and a vest to go with it, out of an old woolen blanket. As I get older, I sometimes get cold. This solved that problem, and I like the look… but I don't wear it in public much.

I like the mysterious sort of medieval quality. Could be cool on stage but the rest of the band would have to have something mysterious going on to make it work.

Of course, a big reason for bass players wearing hats is because they're losing their hair up top and with a hat on, you can't see the high forehead. So I guess that means old bass players wear hats!

I wear both unashamedly but only outdoors for the sunglasses.
