Official 2011-2012 NHL Regular Season Thread; Second Period

Caps looked really good last night in a big win over Detroit. The win keeps them just barely on the right side of the curve for the 8th playoff position. They're three points behind Florida in the 3rd spot, but Florida has two games in hand, and has been playing very well lately.

The sliding Senators are just four points ahead of the Caps in the 7th spot; both teams have 9 games remaining. Even if we can't catch Florida, it would be nice to leap Ottawa and get that much more security in the closing games of the season.

Actually, I think the Pens have a very good chance of getting there this year. Especially if Sid stays healthy. Rangers and Bruins (despite Boston's recent mediocrity) also look pretty strong. My Flyers have a chance if they can get healthy, and Bryzgalov stays hot. I'm thinking one of those 4 teams will represent the East. If I had to rank them by which one has the best chance, I'd probably put them in that order (Pens - Rangers - Bruins - Flyers). Not meaning to slight the other Eastern teams, but that would be how I'd rank their chances.

There is also the small matter of the regular season pretty much going out the window once April comes around. There's a very good chance two of those four teams wont be around anymore in Round Two.

Oh absolutely. It's inevitable. If it ended today, the Pens & Flyers would play in the first round. Poof - one is out. All I'm saying is that IMO, one of those teams will be the one to represent the East in the finals. Might I be wrong? Pretty good chance. I often am. That's why I'm not much of a gambling man...

Hmm, interesting, just looked up the man games lost due to injury...

For whatever reason, the NHL doesn’t make injury totals for its teams widely available, but the man-games lost figures do exist.

Individual teams post them on game notes provided to media prior to every game, and it’s only a matter of going through those notes and compiling them for every team.

This season’s numbers (prior to team’s last game) are below:

Interesting list - if you asked me about Boston this year I would have said, the injuries were about average or maybe higher than average rather than down near the few injuries end of things. It could be because of some important injuries that have occured more recently (Horton, Rask, Peverly)- they were pretty healthy in the first half of the season.
