Official 2011-2012 NHL Regular Season Thread; Second Period

Anyone else hate these stupid digital ads they put on the ice or the upper boards? They are distracting as hell how they kinda shake.

If you're talking about the ones up on the glass behind the goals, UGH! I HATE those things! Haven't noticed them on the ice yet though.

Every time I see a classic game played and see clean baords and ice, I'm really amazed at how much has changed. I'd love to see it go back to white boards and ice without all the ads. Even just what's right behind the boards in the players' bench, penalty box, lower bowl steps, etc... One has to wonder how much of the price we pay for a product goes for advertising these days and how much is the actual product.

The ones on the ice aren't so bad. I haven't seen any on the boards though, save for the real ones, so I can't comment on those. Most of the time here, there are no "extra" ads unless there is a break in play or they are headed to commercials so the camera is stationary.

The ones I have trouble with are the LED ads that are on the boards. The cameras don't pick those up well and they flicker like the old cathode TV's and monitors did when they were filmed.

The ads that appear on the glass behind the goalies are strange- I can only see them at certain camera angles, and sitting in a few different spots at the stadium have not been able to see them. At first I thought it was some kind of OLED thing, but now i'm pretty sure its added in by the production crew for telecast only.

Someday, though, imagine if all the boards had OLED panels inside. Wouldn't be used during play, but you could do amazing visual displays to pump the crowd etc

Flyers had 4 power plays in the 1st period, including about 40 seconds of 5 on 3. Couldn't get one past Clemmenson. That was pretty much their downfall. Missed opportunities. Flyers were buzzing at the end, but couldn't get the equalizer. Tough loss. Wellwood played a strong game. He can really fly.

Hits the nail on the head. One mistake on the Weiss goal and a fortuitous bounce on the Bergenheim (sp?) goal.

That said Wellwood got lucky on his goal as well, so if they don't have that blown change that caught the Flyers' D out high on the Cats' first goal; that game has a different complexion.

That said, while I'm bummed that they lost I can't really find any huge problems in the Flyers' game. They are playing with some confidence. They dominated the shot clock, but yeah,...Cats' Team Defense and Clemmonson stole that game for them along with a bit of luck.

Well, I'm a Red Wings fan tonight!

Gotta say, as a lifetime Bruins fan- I really like the Red Wings. As a kid who grew up playing hockey in New England, one team I played on in Hyannis ("Squirts") was the Red Wings and we kicked ass.

As an adult, I always admire the pro team. They are usually winners and have a great fan base (as does Boston). I guess I am a Wings fan via nostalgia and distant admiration.

Brad Richards with an Evgeni Malkin impersonation tonight. This game was a load of fun to watch, great stuff. An Original Six matchup to top it off.

How about Buffalo making some noise with a late run. They kicked Montreals butt tonight.

Time to settle in for STL/ANA. I'm trying to catch every Anaheim game I can in case this is it for Selanne.

Who is this Radulov phenom? Malkin made sure everyone knew who the best Russian was on the ice tonight. I am surprised how easily the Pens handled Nashville. I expected more from the Predators. The Pens have been playing so well lately......14-1 in the last 15 home games.

The Flyers keep hanging around and staying in the Pens rear view mirror. Nice win in the shootout. I tuned in the shootout since all you Flyer guys bag on your goalie in shootouts. I thought for sure Philly would lose. Way to go Bryzgalov!

Random thoughts -

Was at the Carolina/Jets game Sunday night. Very frustrating game. Could have been the beginning of the end for the Jets this year.

I love John Tortorella. He is hilarious. My favorite NHL coach.

How can you tell it's spring? The Leafs are out!

haha

Pittsburg looked so good against the Jets the other night it was scarey. Although I doubt Dan Blysma or whatever his name is liked the 4 goals the Jets scored. I think he was actually a draft pic of Jets version 1.0 if I remember correctly. They certainly can't play that loose in a couple of weeks. In the Jets defense their 4th line was basically an AHL line due to injuries. And they aren't exactly overflowing with skill as it is.

Did I mention John Tortorella? :bassist:

Their 5-1 win over the Preds was a pretty big statement. Fleury takes the lead for most wins this season. He has been incredible this year. Close to a shutout. The one goal was a goofy bounce.

Malkin is the obvious favorite for MVP but with so many stars people talk less about Neal. He is such a strong player. Glad Pens locked him into a long deal. He slumped a little but is on a rip now.
