Official 2011-2012 NHL Regular Season Thread; Second Period

The Bruins are in the playoffs - they pulled away from the Islanders in the third period. Turco got the win, but let in a soft goal high over the glove that tied the game up. It was almost a home game - plenty of black and gold in the crowd.

For some reason ESPN has the headline "Bruins dash Islanders' playoff hopes" instead of STANLEY CUP CHAMPION Bruins return to the playoffs. :rollno:
:D

The B's need two more points to clinch the division but it is not an easy road with the Rangers, Pens, Senators who may have a chance at the division if the B's don't pick up some points against the Rangers and Pens, and Buffalo which is fighting for the 8 spot.

Caps got Backstrom back! He wasn't much of a factor in the outcome (Caps won in the shootout over Montreal), but it's good to see him playing well out on the ice. He's far from the answer to all of the Caps' problems, but he's a big help, and if he's on his game, he almost makes us a threat to steal a series in the playoffs.

well...this is awful. Dallas does not look like a playoff team in any sense of the word. The pickup game I played last night did better on defense than this- what garbage. The stars are supposed to get by on their hard work; i've never seen so much standing in the defensive zone! It's like a pee-wee team on defense. And then everyone's slamming their sticks and getting angry...Awful....I thought any coach would be able to motivate them better than Crawford, but I guess I was wrong. :scowl:

The stars need to dig- 3 games left after tonight, all against much more motivated teams. If they don't win at least 2, I think they're toast. I'd be surprised if they won another game this year with the way they've played this past 2 weeks. God awful. They've shown bits of brilliant hockey- but inconsistency=death of any playoff dreams.

Yeah, even that load Pierre Maguire said that's as angry as he's ever seen Laviolette. Too bad it had to end that way. The refs are partly to blame. They let far too many slashes and extracurricular crap go without calling anything.

Alright, that's enough smackdowns. Time for the Pens to get a couple wins this week and warm up for the playoffs. I'm half surprised they beat Buffalo on Friday.

Very cool how Jagr and Talbot both scored to lead the comeback. I knew Bobrovsky had it in him. He's good.

I going to my first NHL game - next Saturday afternoon against Buffalo. Now that the B's have the Northeast clinched, the game doesn't officially mean anything to the Bruins, but Buffalo may still be fighting for the 8th spot.

I imagine that Thomas will get the Ottawa game on Thursday as that is the likely first round match up. Turco will probably get either Tuesday against the Pens or Saturday against the Sabres.

I would hope that Turco gets both PIT and BUF. The logical start for Thomas would be @ Ottawa; a chance to get re-familiarized with the building and most of the Ottawa starters as well as five days off before the start of the first round. I'm guessing that Ottawa will be locked in 7th at that point, so neither team will have a vested interest in points for that game. But, the Caps are close enough; haven't done the math...

The only real risk is a bad performance by Thomas that might transfer to Round 1 road games; but that's unlikely, and even so, he's not really a head-case about that sort of issue.

So Flyers coach called Bylsma classless for putting his fourth line on? What a joke that guy is. Seems like a good coach but he is a tool. I thought he was a huge baby on 24/7. If a guy fighting for NHL games on the fourth line landing a clean check is classless, what is Schenn's cross check to Crosby's back during play stoppage? Honorable?

Interesting note from the EDM/ANA game last night....all three goals in the game were scored by Teemu. One from Selanne, two from Hartikainen.

I watched the game since it was the last Ducks home game this season. Those fans really love Selanne. With about five minutes left in the game, Selanne got a standing ovation and "one more year" chants from the crowd, very cool. I wish I could have been there.

Schenn's crosscheck to Crosby wasn't during a stoppage. It was during play. It was prior to Pittsburgh's 3rd goal being scored and after Crosby had dished it out in the corner to Schenn. Schenn just was a bit late in retaliation and Crosby went down easy to draw the penalty. Penalty was called at first and then was waived off when the goal was eventually awarded.

I'm guessing the game Saturday starts with both teams 4th lines on the ice. Not sure if either team would be wise to dress their stars.

Pfft,....Kudos to Lavy for standing up for his team. Coaches in the past have not had enough fire for the Flyers. Lavy argues iffy calls and get's pissed with the Refs,...class has nothing to do with it, it's about addressing the double standard that the Flyer's reputation dictates. IMO Bylsma got outcoached by Lavy in this game. Surely Pens fans will say that he is classless,....okay,...we are under your skin,....I like it.

Vitale's hit may have been clean but with the game out of hand in the Flyers favor and the puck playable off of Briere's stick; the hit was uncalled for and retaliation should've been expected.

I don't fault Bylsma for putting that line out there. I don't think he did it with the intention of his players taking liberties with the Flyers players. Vitale was trying to send that "you may win this game but not without paying a price" message, and the Flyers didn't back down. I'm fine with it,...I don't expect Pens fans to be. Gotta remember that there is still a game in Pittsburgh to play,...and these two teams will like meet up in the 1st round. Gonna be Ruckus. I like Ruckus.

The Pens got away with a lot of clutch and grab, holding the sticks; Crosby got away with a slash to Voracek. If we want to talk about classless,...how about the two headshots to Giroux from Malikn while down on the ice. Malkin can go **** a blender as far as I'm concerned.

EDIT: Danny B out indefinitely with an Upper Back Contusion,....no indication if it was a result of the Vitale hit but the writing is on the wall.

Also Grossmann out with a lower body injury as the result of a Knee on Knee collision initiated by a Penguins player,...also not called (Kneeing is a penalty that can be called).

So if the Pens can bang up the Flyers without oversight from the Refs or their coach,...I see no issue with Lavy getting frustrated. This Flyers team can ill afford to lose any more man games due to injury especially to their blueliners.
