Official 2011-2012 NHL Regular Season Thread; Second Period

Also,...(this is just me thinking I'm clever).....

In regards to Byslma being a former Jack Adams winner (and any other trophies and awards for that matter).....

In the game of hockey,...only one trophy means anything.

Pfft,....Kudos to Lavy for standing up for his team. Coaches in the past have not had enough fire for the Flyers. Lavy argues iffy calls and get's pissed with the Refs,...class has nothing to do with it, it's about addressing the double standard that the Flyer's reputation dictates. IMO Bylsma got outcoached by Lavy in this game. Surely Pens fans will say that he is classless,....okay,...we are under your skin,....I like it.

Vitale's hit may have been clean but with the game out of hand in the Flyers favor and the puck playable off of Briere's stick; the hit was uncalled for and retaliation should've been expected.

I don't fault Bylsma for putting that line out there. I don't think he did it with the intention of his players taking liberties with the Flyers players. Vitale was trying to send that "you may win this game but not without paying a price" message, and the Flyers didn't back down. I'm fine with it,...I don't expect Pens fans to be. Gotta remember that there is still a game in Pittsburgh to play,...and these two teams will like meet up in the 1st round. Gonna be Ruckus. I like Ruckus.

The Pens got away with a lot of clutch and grab, holding the sticks; Crosby got away with a slash to Voracek. If we want to talk about classless,...how about the two headshots to Giroux from Malikn while down on the ice. Malkin can go **** a blender as far as I'm concerned.

EDIT: Danny B out indefinitely with an Upper Back Contusion,....no indication if it was a result of the Vitale hit but the writing is on the wall.

Also Grossmann out with a lower body injury as the result of a Knee on Knee collision initiated by a Penguins player,...also not called (Kneeing is a penalty that can be called).

So if the Pens can bang up the Flyers without oversight from the Refs or their coach,...I see no issue with Lavy getting frustrated. This Flyers team can ill afford to lose any more man games due to injury especially to their blueliners.

I didn't call what the Flyers did classless, I said Laviolette is an idiot for calling Bylsma classless. And your whole post reeks of a holier than thou perspective, making it sound like the Pens are the dirtiest team in the league and the Flyers are angels. Obviously both teams are going to try whatever they can get away with. It is a cross state rivalry and dirty stuff happens from both teams all game. You make it sound like the Pens were picking on the Flyers and there was nothing they could do about it.

Pens don't have a single goon in their lineup. It's not like the fourth line is out there to hurt someone. Vitale is a grinder and spends half the game on his knees trying to dig the puck out from behind the net in the offensive zone. He's not known as a big hitter. And it's not like he hit Briere with 10 seconds left. There was over a minute left to be played. If Briere doesn't want to be hit like that, he should try looking up instead of at the puck when bringing it down the center of the ice. There was nothing "uncalled for" about the hit. The game isn't over.

I don't really understand the rest of your points. Are we going to mention every penalty that hasn't been called in a Pens Flyers game the past 5 years?

Yes, sorry. You are correct. My point still stands, however. There is no love lost between these two teams. It is going to be dirty and ugly every time. Laviolette is really just embarrassing himself by calling a stand up guy and last year's Jack Adams winner classless.

Prior to that game I still believed there was no real rivalry between the Flyers and Penguins. Well, there is one now. Could b great fun in the first round! :D

Flyers have a couple guys that are getting to Malkin and Crosby in a way the Richards and Carter never did. Schenn and Couturier just kept getting right in their faces all night. Much like Therien used to do with Jagr.

This Pennsylvania thing you guys have going on is just freaking awesome.

Carry on, and don't skimp on the venom!

Ok if you say so! :bassist:

Do you know what it still looks like after 37 years? ;)

I have much more respect for this "new" Flyers team than I had before. With their off season moves I thought they would have an average season this year but they are incredible. Very impressed with how Hartnell has stepped up this year too. Lots of things for Flyers fans to be excited about when they're not booing their own team! ;)

PS I'm making sure I'm grabbing tickets for a playoff game in Pittsburgh. Flyers better not ruin this for me...

Hey,....I'm just pointing out why this game got out of hand and why Lavy lost control with the Pen's bench. I don't fault Lavy from getting upset. So much of the Playoff's is dependent upon health and from his house it looks like the Pens are trying to take players out. May or may not be the case but you can't fault Lavy for drawing that conclusion

Look at the hit again,....Vitale made a disrespectful decision,....Briere's head is up. There is no need to make that hit in a game that is 6-3 with a minute left. I'm sorry but in reality there is little hope to come back from 3 down with a minute left. Granted it happens,...but the odds are not in your favor.

It was clean I'll give him that,...but I think out of frustration on Vitale's part he went for the man instead of the puck.

Sorry you think I'm holier than thou,...that's fine if you do. I'm done proselytizing,...I have my opinion and you have yours,...and we are just going to have to be content to disagree with one another.

Sorry, if the situation was reversed with the Vitale and Briere you'd be laughing your head off telling me to stop whining. I still say there is absolutely nothing wrong with the hit. What if there were 2 minutes left? 3 minutes? At what point is a completely legal check in open ice disrespectful? Have another slice of homer pie ;)

No issues from me with how the game played out Sunday, except for the Pens losing. I enjoyed every minute of that game as a hockey fan. Physical, intense, highly competitive, and yeah physical. The only thing that would have been better would have been a 1-0 or 2-1 game.

The Vitale hit? Eh, nothing dirty about it or classless. Was it necessary? I'm not the one to judge that, so I let it go as part of the game. A Flyer would have done the same to a Pen had it been the Pens up. Both teams wanted to send a message in that game, win or lose. Mission accomplished in my mind. I really like the mental aspect to sports, so I soak that stuff up.

I have too much respect for my Flyer brothers to talk trash to them here. Besides what can I say really when their team is 5-0 in my teams arena since it opened? :)

The Vitale hit was clean
that was not the issue
it was the coach's decision to send the goon squad out with a minute left in the game

Cindy got cross checked by Schenn because of the cheap shot he put on Schenn from behind
not too mention the slashes on Giroux while the ref looked on

Cindy is a whiner and a diver.

I'm glad the Flyers will be meeting them in the first round.
Can't wait to see the Pens get eliminated

Go Flyers!

I get you're pissed about one of your boys getting hit harder than you felt like he should at that point in the game, but are you thinking that was the intention of Bylsma in sending Vitale on the ice? Who should have been on the ice for the Pens in a meaningless game at that point? Malkin, Neal, and Kunitz? Would Laviolette have his first line out there trying to score three goals in 60 seconds had the Flyers been down 6-3?

Go ahead and be mad, but don't act like the Flyers skated around playing clean penalty free hockey for 60 minutes while the Pens hacked, slashed, and grabbed the Flyers as the refs looked the other way. I saw it both ways, and see it in every game I watch. Maybe six ref's on the ice would help?

And it was the other coach's decision to have his second line out when up 6-3 with a minute to play. Philly used to be known as a rough-and-tumble team - don't they have a 4th line? ;)

Lavy's anger is just a bit misdirected - he made a mistake and because he can't admit it, his anger came out against the Pens instead of against himself.

We've had good nights the last 2 outings and Radz is continuing to grow back into the NHL. Points in all but one game back, and I finally see what all the fuss was in Detroit, Vancouver, and St. Louis. Hopefully the teams has another good outing or two to build on heading into the playoffs because we've flat outplayed all the good competition in the West this year. The teams that honestly scare me are what we could go up against in the East come SC Finals time. I think Philly, the Pens, and Boston could really pose a threat to us.
