You never forget your first Ampeg, dude. I've forgotten my first chick but I remember my first Ampeg like it was yesterday. 70's V4B with an SVT cab. Bought it from my cousin Steve when I was 17 for $500. It was mint when I got it. He kept it in the original boxes and wrapped the boxes in blankets to move it. It didn't stay mint for long. That amp was a workhorse. Always sounded great, never broke down once except for a tube. I used to carry 1000 seat venues with stage volume in hard rock bands and never ran out despite its 100 watts.

In 1986 or 87, I had a two-week stint at a bar, and the owner said we could leave the stuff there on our 3 days off and nothing would happen to it. The Sunday after our first week, the bar burned down to the ground and took all our equipment with it. Every single bit of it. My V4B had melted and all that was left was a bent up chassis and some wood still stuck to it.

And thank God it happened, because 6 months later, I found a used SVT rig for $650 that used to belong to the organist for Iron Butterfly. I just recently found out that it's one of the very first SVT's to roll out of the factory, and I'm restoring it in this thread:

I wouldn't have ever bought it if my V4B rig hadn't burned up. So if you like to read about a grown man's namby pamby fretting and sweating over every single little minor detail of a vintage SVT, check it out.

Hunting like CRAZY for a great condition USA Ampeg SVT Classic CL Amp

You know I got mine at GC over the holidays. It's a USA model and was the demo on the floor for about 2 years. Salesman said that GC is getting rid of all the USA demo stuff for cheap. I paid $999 for it and I get the full 5 year warranty. Might want to check out your local Guitar Center. The tag still said $1599 but when looked up in the system it was discounted.
