Tried the ATK at rehearsal for the first time tonight.

Dang.....that's tight and powerful.

It really does maintain that tight growly Stingray low end, but much more of an organic high end (in single mode).

In humbucking mode it sound a little more scooped and the zippy high active end....but it can be dialed in/out.

The neck is chunky.....more than I'm used to (but like it a lot).....definitely different than most Stingrays.

my favorite is the internal trim pot to match the output of your other bass.
That means I don't have to mess around with pedal levels, etc......

Glad to hear you like it Josh. POWERFUL is a perfect word to describe it. there are many times even to this day, years after getting my first ATK, when I play something and just smile from its power. love it

You know....it's the kind of tight grind that I had always wished my SR5 had.

*gasp*

I need to mention, that it fits a mix well too. the powerful low end is perfect for a dense mix. must be a low mid range natural boost.

Prior to rehearsal, I was rather 50/50 with the ATK......the bass played well....but it was little heavy and the tone was alright.

When the band kicked it.......damn. :)

i'm not a member of this club, but i have owned both a stingray and an atk, and although i love the classic lines of a ray, the atk wins soundwise to me. the ray sounds great, but that sound is in every switch. the atk has a similar voice, but its voicing is more flexible to me.

what peavey's are you referring to?

millenniums? cirrus? foundations?

the mill would seem to be obviously close in sound to the ATK due to having the "stingray" humbucker, however, the peavey is much more darker sounding to my ears. i believe this has a lot to do with the preamp.

the cirrus is a night and day difference in both tone and feel. classic tone vs. modern tone there.

the foundation is a modern jazz to me. punchy and growly but subtle enough to work in any mix.

I have a millennium and foundation.....and I would completely agree.

I only ask, since you're a peavey connoisseur. ;)

Yup.

Those were my thoughts......the ATK to me, has that active high end zing......but a nice passive-ish attack and natural low end.

I was running the single mode without the high end cut........with a little low boost and high end cut. awesome.

I cherish my Foundation 5......but this ATK is great.

Some would say to a fault.:D

My top 3 basses are all under $300 (the ATK was the most expensive).....but play and sound better than my $600+ basses. go figure.

I went from a Warwick Corvette $$ 5 and EBMM Stingray 5 to a Peavey Foundation 5, 70s Memphis P copy and now the ATK.
I've also gone from a Mesa M2000 amp to an 800RB.

We like what we like.

The fancy figured maple bass in my sig would cost at least 3 grand, if you could find a luthier to clone it. I find that my $250 ATK compliments it perfectly, and lately they've been getting roughly equal play time.

Neither does what the other can do....

I had the 305 a few months back, but I got rid of it. I'm just not down with the 5 right now. haha.
What can I expect in comparison sound wise? Can I coax a super ballsy Jazz tone out of it?I didn't get a chance to try the 305 in band context.
I have a Squier VM P (Drop B) with an SB2 pickup> Rat > Peavey VB2> Laney 8x10 and I'm getting 80% of the tone I hear in my head with that. I play garage metal :)
How is the neck?
Any suggested rock settings to start with?
I think I'll be hanging on to this one for a while. Unless somebody trades me for their blue quilted haha
I searched, and I'll search again. But I'd rather ask here then come across a bunch of haters making me second guess my purchase ha.

Question for the ATK experts. This one has to do with neck profile at the nut/1st position. I used to own an ATK (purchased around '97 or '98), can't remember the exact model but it was the one that had a nice koa top on the body (750?). Wish I had a pic, I would post it. I ended up selling for reasons I can't remember but one of them had to do with the neck width at the nut, for my tastes was a bit too wide. It wasn't terrible but I do remember getting some hand fatigue and not being able to execute some songs as well that primarily stayed in the 1st position. I gave it a shot having played it for a long while but in the end, never got quite used to it compared to other basses.

Anyways, recently I played a used ATK700 (quilt top, 5 piece neck) at a local store and was surprised at how comfortable the neck was in 1st position. Didn't seem as wide as I remembered, more comfortable than the Stingray necks I've tried. So did Ibanez alter the neck profile over the years or is it possibly me just getting used to other things (getting older)?

I have to agree with others that the ATK has that fat low end that the Stingray has but a more pleasant mid- and treble range. I listened to some recordings from years ago in which I used the ATK and was pleased with the tone.
