overall the neck portion that is on the body is thinner on the new one. I can fit my index finger barely flat between the strings and pickguard on my older one. not to much on the newer one. strange, not enough to really get my goat, but noteworthy nonetheless.

That is interesting.

Is the neck pocket deeper, or the heel of the neck thinner, or is the body thicker???

Were they both made in the same country?

I think the heel of the neck is the culprit, because the rest of the neck feels the same, the body feels the same, and the pocket looks the same. old one made in Korea, new one made in Indonesia.

You are probably correct. Since manufacturing in Indonesia was a way to cut cost, they likely had them start necks with smaller stock, too. FWIW, the few ATK's that I have heard of having neck issues came from Indonesia, so maybe some of the stock was also bad or not dry enough, IDK.

Both of mine are MIK, and the quality is amazing.

Yes I see what you mean. The 2 older ATKs I have are MIK and for being 15 years old, wow they look and feel amazing.

ATK bump. It turns out my main ATK's electronics, kinda ate the turd. After like 5 minutes of playing I would get noise as if it wasnt shielded. It is shielded, and nothing changes other than the timeframe of playing. the input jack is getting iffy too. so right now its chillin in a case, and hopefully next friday I will be ordering an audere to pop in there. the pickup switch in that one has been broken ever since I received the bass, although its still wired up (the actual switch being broken) so I never got to use it, and didnt mind. so the Z switch will be going there instead, and I will be bypassing the pickup switches.

I do have a question though, what leads from the pickup will I be attaching to the new preamp? I'm thinking I can choose between what coils I want to keep there, but Id like to know how to do it, and I guess just shrink wrap the unused ones?

LOL. I had to ask :D

no worries. its always the first thing I check.

and yes, always good to have a spare, although I still only have one right now, as my neck isnt finished yet. here is a question. Ive done a little searching, but the triple coil pickup is so strange that I cant find a direct answer. in the event I have no other option, how do I solder the pickup straight to the jack? I hate gigging without a backup, even if my backup is straight wired and shoddy. lol

I haven't done it, but I would guess you run the ground wire from the pup to the inner sleeve of the jack, and the hot wires to the tip> And if it has a middle ring, I would disconnect it because that's probably just where your battery is running now anyway.

Not sure if that would be the way to go, as the pickups were designed to run through the electronics. They might not be strong enough to have a good passive signal. Some pickups, like EMG's, are wound weaker to work with active eq's.

Someone in this thread may know about this better than me. Not sure if it's worth the time to bypass the eq, but I would be interested in your review in case you do....

somewhere around here there are some ATK wiring diagrams posted if you need to identify wires from the pup. Diogenes had them on his web page at one time too.

They're still there but the problem is that non of the diagrams map the coil wires so you really don't know which is which and you can't just check the continuity between two leads and assume that they're part of the same coil because one lead can show the same amount of resistance between it and two other leads.

uh oh. so today I got in my order of 36 duracell procells, so just for gimmicks I popped one in my bass and....it works. well the eq doesnt. like at all, but its running throught the preamp fine, no hiss no static, and i have volume control. this is why I dont use energizers, I must of had 3 almost DOA batteries, new. so, in conclusion i have a bass that works, short of an onboard eq. although I can still hear the natural tone of this preamp (the only 3 band eq seymour duncan offers) compared t my other atk with the stock preamp. interesting to note when both are flat they sound completely different, and with the same strings. I am still ordering an audere, getting a new jack etc because...well I can :D

gah, so itll be a mater of wiring up, then lightly tapping something metal against the pickup to find out which coils are active. I did that at one point with my black atk because I wanted to know if they really were switching coils. its a nifty little way to check. would I still be leaving whatever leads arent being used out and about, just shrink wrapped, or do they need to be soldered somewhere?

The ATK pickup should work well as a passive since there was no dramatic difference when I installed a passive dual-coil MM style pickup to run through the ATK's preamp.
