Awesome might be a little bright fr me though, I like a pretty fat set of nickels, I like the new string clarity but not a fan of the high end bite some have.

I take it it's not just me that has the problem with getting on enough strings.

Well bear in mind that the Burners are bright relative to other nickels. They sound a bit like worn steels after about a week. Any of the Ken Smiths will fit the ATK in thring-through mode, BTW. Rock Master heavy-guage are beautifully balanced and Compressors (my FAVORTIES) remove some the top end and give you lots of warm, punchy mids altho they only come in .105's AFAIK. But they do last forever...

OK, I inserted a set of Rotosound RS66LD (105...43) roundwound strings to my ATK. It sounds somewhat different, the Rotosound has its own sound. Anyway, based on the default Elixirs, I think I need to use thicker strings to make a more punchy sound with ATK. Does anyone know what the default Elixir string sizes are? --Kent

By "default" I take it that that is what is on a factory setup ATK, if so you can probably find out the gauges on the Ibanez website. As far as I'm aware most bass strings are 105-45. 110s usually fatten up a bass sound pretty well, although the extra tension from thicker strings seems to make it a little more tight and defined unless you find some pretty low tension ones, depends what sound your after of course.

OK, I will hunt around at the Ibanez site, or worst case measure the gauges on the original strings. I usually get Rotosound BS66 sets, they have a 110 low end, but most places have them on back-order just now and I was in a hurry and picked up a RS66LD set instead (105 instead of 110). The 110 works fine for me, as I tune down the set to D-G-C-F anyway. --Kent

I think he has one in 400. The 400 series were the ones without pickguards and had 24 frets, also had a large ATK logo on the top right of the headstock, with a small mention of Ibanez underneath it.

I'm getting £180 worth of pickups from Chris Dolf so I'm no better really, almost as much as I paid for my bass but it was a right steal. £300 for a '96 Japanese made 300 and I wasn't even too sure what I was getting at the time, very fortunate.

But I will have the extra pickup mojo too, when my pickups get here that is! It's like waiting for Christmas without knowing the date...

Are you adding a J pickup to your ATK aswell as a newer bridge pickup?

I got my bass for a steal too, £150 for an ATK 400 that the guy on ebay was adminant was an ATK 100 (which I told him before bidding it wasnt).

Aye basically. There are a few things on my 400 which are bugging me. Just want a clean slate really, and love the finishes of the 750s

Oh aye? My really big plan, if I could afford it, would be for a luither to make a customised copy for me, not likely to happen anytime soon!

And yeah getting some Jazzness going on mine, apparently it's only gonna cost 45 to carve it in, just need to find a decent blend pot, preferably one I can lock in place somehow so I don't mess it up. Not sure what this Jazz pickups gonna be like exactly, but If I don't like it I might go for a Quarter pounder, cos I already know I love those things.

Can see why you might wanna get rid of the 400, there's something about that series that seemed kind of off, didn't seem to have the quality of the 300s. Mind you that's based on me having a solid as hell Japanese made one.

Nah it is a fine bass, I dont think there is anything off with it really, just wanting something a bit fresher really. Side by side with the 300s there really wasnt anything in it, other than the 400 having more frets and more tones

OK, after having Rotosound RS66LDs on my ATK for a week, it definitely makes the ATK sound more metallic and rustic. I might switch to another brand later, to get back the more soul-like sound you could get with fat strings and an ATK. --Kent
